More than 20,000 gathered in Mexico City Sunday (Sep 8) in opposition of President Enrique Pe?a Nieto's energy reform.
Citizens packed more than six blocks near the center of the capital to hear the speech of two-time presidential runner-up Andr?s Manuel Lopez Obrador, who says the president is selling Mexico's oil industry to foreign firms.
"It is outrageous and unacceptable that now, in a shameless and arrogant manner, they want to strip the nation of its energy sector and cash in the future of the people and coming generations," he said of Pe?a Nieto's energy reform.
The left-wing politician says the president's reform would hand over US$30bn-40bn in revenues, normally destined for national oil company Pemex, to private firms annually.
L?pez Obrador acknowledged in his speech that left-wing representatives in Mexico's congress would not be able to halt Pe?a Nieto's PRI party and the right-wing PAN in their bid to open the industry to private investment.
"The only thing that can stop these measures against the public interest is citizen demonstration," he said.
Lopez Obrador announced in his speech a peaceful march through Mexico City on September 22 to show Pe?a Nieto that the Mexican people oppose his reform of the energy sector.
