NBA League Pass guide: Who to watch this season

Posted September 29, 2013

Houston Rockets

The new-look Rockets should be both entertaining and relevant in 2013-14. (David J. Phillip/AP

If you had to choose a mere five teams to watch regularly this season, which would they be?

With the cost of NBA League Pass ? the platform that allows fans to view most every regular-season game ? prohibitive to some, the league offers basketball die-hards an alternative. Rather than leave a pricey, league-wide subscription as the only choice on the table, the NBA now gives fans a more customizable option: the opportunity to purchase a cheaper, online-only package with access to the games of five subscriber-selected teams. This creates both a functional compromise and a fascinating mental exercise.

There?s a delicate art in constructing the perfect, personalized five-team package,?inevitably drawing on both personal preference (favorite teams, players, etc.) and pragmatic concerns (schedule structure, division, time zone, etc.). But I?d also urge interested parties to pay mind to the 30 teams? League Pass personality types, whether to stack their selections by style or balance them out as best as possible.

THE ENIGMAS

The teams: New Orleans Pelicans,?Dallas Mavericks,?Brooklyn Nets,?Cleveland Cavaliers,?Washington Wizards
The appeal:?
Indulge your hardwood curiosities with some of the strangest ? and most captivating ? teams in the league.

Charting the unexpected is one of the pleasures of the NBA?s regular season, and each of these five teams offers a window into that great unknown. New Orleans? youth and positional flexibility leaves their season as an open question, set to unfold in progress, clutter, or even fringe playoff contention. Dallas brings a fascinating juxtaposition of the efficient and the bold, as Dirk Nowitzki, Monta Ellis, and Jose Calderon will form the basis of a strange (and likely effective) offense.?Brooklyn has the benefit of being refreshed in most every respect; while Deron Williams, Brook Lopez, Joe Johnson, and other core players remain from last year?s team, the hiring of Jason Kidd as head coach and a high-profile roster overhaul give the Nets a novel appeal.

GIVE AND GO: Reminiscing about the 2013 offseason

For their part, Cleveland and Washington are fitting foils, defined by talented young point guards as they attempt to overcome their teammates? injuries to compete for an Eastern Conference playoff berth. Either could again wind up in the lottery if that endeavor goes poorly, but each has intriguing potential with a wide range of possible outcomes.

THE UBIQUITOUS

The teams: New York Knicks, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Clippers
The appeal: Keep up with popular, successful teams at the expense of League Pass pragmatism.

This is admittedly a logistical classification, but one can?t well separate a team?s League Pass identity from their exposure on national television. It?s one thing for a displaced Thunder fan to pay out for every one of their favorite team?s games, but another entirely for a fan of the league at large to waste a valuable League Pass slot on a team that can be readily found elsewhere on television. Each of these five teams will have roughly a third of their games (or more) broadcast on national TV this season, making them a bit imprudent to select in multiples. Pick up one of these teams to follow along with their winning season if you will, but try to avoid piling up too many lest you squander your League Pass value.

THE MANIC PIXIE DREAM TEAMS

The teams: Detroit Pistons, Minnesota Timberwolves, Golden State Warriors, Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets
The appeal: Learn to embrace basketball life and its infinite mysteries and adventures.

There are no options more delightfully indulgent. None of these five is especially likely to win the title this season (though Golden State and Houston come closest), but all promise fevered entertainment over the 82-game course. Detroit is easily the purest example of this kind, as an array of athletic bigs and frantic guards provide the perfect joint vehicle for slapdash brilliance. Minnesota, equipped to run relentlessly and move the ball without pause, is due a return to charismatic form. Golden State has made some fantastic moves to bolster its defense and balance its performance, but remains so explosive that watching the Warriors should still feel like a guilty pleasure.

Despite changes through its front office, coaching staff, and roster, Denver still has an imitable lightness, forged through Ty Lawson?s waterbug quicks, Kenneth Faried?s springy relentlessness, and JaVale McGee?s unquellable whimsy. Houston comes with a bit more narrative weight than the others in this bunch, but has amazing stylistic potential ? between sprinting into three-pointers and working Dwight Howard in the pick-and-roll ? as to warrant easy admission.

Chicago train accident injures 33

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Two Chicago Transit Authority trains collided in a western suburb of Chicago during Monday morning's rush hour, resulting in 33 injuries, the agency reported.

The incident happened at the Harlem Station in Forest Park, Illinois, west of Chicago. One train was standing at the station at the time of the accident at 7:45 a.m. local time, according to CTA spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski. The cause is under investigation.

Thirty-three people were transported to nine area hospitals with what appeared to be non-serious injuries, Hosinski said. One of those requesting medical attention was a train operator.

Service on the line was shut down for a couple of hours and the station where the collision occurred remained closed after service was restored, the CTA said.

Washington pummels Pekin football in 55-19 Mid-Illini victory

?Casey didn?t strike out Friday night.

Washington senior Casey Danley struck for five touchdowns as the undefeated and state-ranked Panthers pummeled Pekin 55-19 in a Mid-Illini Conference football game at Babcook Field.

The 6-foot, 185-pound tailback scored on his first three carries, racing 65, 54 and 67 yards in the opening quarter, as Class 5A No. 6 Washington (5-0, 3-0) grabbed a 28-12 lead.

Danley had a 2-yard run for a TD and he threw a 76-yard option pass to Hayden Bodine for a third-quarter score.

The converted wide receiver, who ran for 244 yards and two TDs last week vs. Dunlap, finished with 270 yards rushing on 12 carries against Pekin.

?Casey is fast and strong. He?s a good athlete,? said Washington coach Darrell Crouch. ?I thought this game (against Pekin) would be a seven- or 14-point difference. I never would have predicted this score. We executed well on offense.?

Of the 525 yards in total offense compiled by the Panthers, 477 came on the ground.? ?They?re more physical than us,? Pekin coach Doug Nutter said.

Already depleted by injuries, the Dragons (3-2, 1-2) lost two more important players when leading rusher Tyler Bucco (knee) and Michael Bianchi (ankle) were hurt.

?We?ll have to play with who we have,? said Nutter, whose squad hosts Metamora next week.

Pekin scored first Friday when quarterback Chase Poole hooked up with Mat McClanahan on a 22-yard touchdown pass.

But it took Washington just 13 seconds to take the lead for good 7-6. Danley collected a pitch from quarterback Colton Marshall and raced 65 yards down the right side into the end zone.

Jake Miller kicked seven PATs.

Danley slipped several tackles en route to his 54-yard score, and his 67-yarder was right up the middle.

The Panthers also scored in the opening quarter on a perfectly thrown 47-yard pass from Marshall to Bodine.

Jake Clark ran 33 yards and backup QB Brock Crothers ran 68 yards for scores inthe fourth for Washington.

Pekin also scored on a 1-yard runs by Poole and Ryan Patterson.

What?s with Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Region Locked? ignore it!

There were reports about Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and other high end Samsung smartphones that were region-locked i.e. the handset will work with any of the SIM? from Mobile operator operating within the region from where the handset was bought. If the handset was purchased from Europe it will work only with SIM-cards from operators working within Europe.

Samsung has added this feature to prevent cheaper imports. This means that if you buy the device from another country it will not work in your country. Say if you buy the device from US and you want to use it in India it will not work, however if you use the device in US, i.e use a US SIM card on the device it will work and also deactivate the region lock, thereafter you can use it in any county with any SIM.

Indian users need not worry about this unless you are not buying the handset from the Indian market. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Region lock is just a simple one time prevention system to prevent cheap imports and does not force the user to use the device in particular region, well that would be stupid and senseless.

Samsung Galaxy Note region locked

The Galaxy Note 3 is priced at Rs. 49,900. It is powered by 1.9GHz octa core processor and runs on Android 4.3 with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. If I can get hold of the Galaxy Note 3 I will get the review done.

Mariano Rivera's Final Exit Is The Goose Bumpiest Baseball ...

Mo's Final Moment

The New York Yankees may not have made the playoffs, but they did wind up with one of the biggest stories of the year in the farewell tour of their longtime closer and one of Major League Baseball?s true gentleman superstars, Mariano Rivera. It all came to a head last night with the Tampa Bay Rays, still in the thick of the American League?s Wild Card race, defeating the Yankees, but nobody cares about the score, because it was Rivera?s last pitching appearance in Yankee Stadium. Presumably ever, unless Joe Girardi pulls off the miracle of all miracles and figures out a way to help Mo return all of the gifts he received from other teams.

All obvious hero worship aside, I?m really waiting for a national columnist to step forward with the ?Mariano Rivera wasn?t as good as everyone is pretending? troll piece. (UPDATE: Nevermind, it already exists.) It has to be coming. It?s 2013 after all, and we?re ripe for contrarian nonsense that rapes journalism?s dead corpse for the sake of page views.

In the meantime, stay tuned for my slideshow of Kate Upton pictures that remind me of Mariano Rivera?s best games.

California Department of Justice sued for misuse of firearm purchaser fee

Attorneys from the law firm of Michel & Associates, P.C. have filed a lawsuit on behalf of several individual gun owners and the Calguns Shooting Sports Association ("CGSSA"), challenging the California Department of Justice's (DOJ) misuse of monies collected from a fee that DOJ can require firearm purchasers to pay at the time of sale, the Dealer Record of Sale (DROS) Fee. The lawsuit, assisted by the National Rifle Association, who has brought a federal lawsuit (Bauer v. Harris) seeking similar relief on Second Amendment grounds, seeks to stop DOJ from continuing to stick law abiding gun owners with the bill for funding its general law enforcement projects through the DROS fee.

New security measures won't kill passwords anytime soon

    password

    passwords

    Getty Images

With the iPhone 5S and its fingerprint scanner selling well, one is tempted to say that we may soon no longer have to remember a 4-digit PIN or 10-character phrase with which to access your device or apps. But considering the well-publicized weaknesses of biometrics and the tried-and-true nature of passwords, it looks like we'll be using the old methods for while longer ? and with good reason.

Of course, many who dislike passwords also do so with good reason. Who wants to remember "Yank33*d00dle1979" and five or ten other variants to comply with various sites' rules and length requirements? And plenty of people don't even try, meaning the most common password is, of course, "password."

So it's no surprise that we would welcome a quick, easy security system like Apple's fingerprint reader (likely to come to other devices, from iPads to MacBooks, in time) as a breath of fresh air.

But is that really it for passwords? It doesn't seem likely.

"Personally, I don't think passwords are dead," said Corey Nachreiner, director of security strategy and research at the online security firm Watchguard, in an interview with NBC News. "No matter what method you have, biometrics, a password, a special piece of hardware, it's not infallible."

    Apple

    Apple

Apple's Touch ID system in CG exploded view.

And when you get down to it, biometric security is really just a super-complicated password that you can't forget ? nor, of course, can you pick it in the first place or change it if someone gets hold of it.

Many high-profile hacks expose usernames and passwords stored improperly by online services. Such a hack could reveal biometric data as well, and once your fingerprint (or retina, or DNA sequence) is out there, that's that.

Furthermore, as the recent NSA leaks have shown us, security is as much about trust as it is about good encryption. A fingerprint, retinal scan and special security dongle mean nothing if the company holding your data isn't secure ? or gives up your data without a fight.

"Is it possible to extract and obtain fingerprint data from an iPhone?" asked Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., in a letter to Apple (PDF). His concern is that the company makes absolutely clear how and where the newly collected biometric information is kept and transmitted. Another key (and as yet unanswered) question from Franken: "Does Apple have any plans to allow any third party applications access to the Touch ID system or its fingerprint data?"

Those potential menaces are significant, but out of the user's hands. If the object is to prevent a phone's unauthorized use by thieves, co-workers and jealous exes, simple alphanumeric passwords still have several advantages over a biometric one like a fingerprint:

    • They can easily be made device or site specific, keeping security breaches in one area from leaking to others
    • They can be shared with others simply and easily
    • They require no special hardware or software
    • They are well-understood and already implemented all over the world
    • They can be as long or short ? and as simple or complex ? as the situation demands

Such advantages are not to be underestimated as digital devices become more ubiquitous. However, we could discuss the merits and shortcomings of individual systems all day long ? but the real question is how to use them together.

"We should be talking more about having multiple factors and making those factors easier for people to use," said Nachreiner. "Passwords aren't perfect, fingerprints aren't perfect, but together they're pretty strong."

    two-step

    Apple

Apple was actually one of the later big tech companies to adopt two-factor authentication.

Indeed, the most effective new form of security is what's called "two-factor authentication." It's a fancy way to say that a website or service is making sure you're you not just by checking something that you know (a password), but also something that you have (like your phone, which will also be contacted). A thief may steal your phone, or may acquire your username and password, but it's very unlikely that they'll get both.

A password is the best and simplest option for the "something you know" part of the equation. And a fingerprint or other biometric factor is a great choice for "something you have" ? instead of a phone or dongle you could easily lose or have stolen.

In the end, what's happening is that the password is becoming just one of many security systems that keep our data safe. Biometrics will add an unobtrusive second measure to the average login, but security-conscious people will likely want to use passwords as well. (Password management software helps keep your many accounts in line.)

It's important to note, however, that security is and always will be a work in progress as long as there are bad folks out there trying to get at your data. "Unless you unplug yourself from the Internet," concluded Nachreiner, "nothing is perfect."

Cargill Beef to give $100,000 to Homes for Our Troops

    John Stearns

Marine Sgt. James "Matt" Amos will receive the keys this weekend to a home built for him by the Wichita Area Builders Association through its Home Builders Care Foundation and in coordination with Homes for Our Troops

Cargill Beef will donate $100,000 to Homes for Our Troops, the nonprofit organization behind construction of a specially adapted home near Mount Hope for a wounded Marine and his family.

Marine Sgt. James ?Matt? Amos on Saturday will receive keys to the home, which was built by the Wichita Area Builders Association through its Home Builders Care Foundation and in coordination with Homes for Our Troops. Amos, who lost both legs when he stepped on an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan in 2011, receives the home mortgage-free.

For Amos? new home, Cargill is donating a large freezer filled with beef, according to Cargill spokesman Mike Martin.

In addition to the $100,000 Cargill will give Homes for Our Troops this weekend, Cargill also raised $18,600 for the organization through a burger tent at Century II during the BlackTop Nationals and at an event at its Dodge City beef processing plant, Martin says.

The company also plans to make Amos the face of an 18-month point-of-sale campaign at retailers nationwide to try to raise additional money for Homes for Our Troops.

The public is invited to Saturday?s 11 a.m. ?key ceremony? for Amos at the home at 25011 S. Haven Road, near Cheney Reservoir.

Associate of ex-NFL player Aaron Hernandez indicted in shooting death

    Criminal Justice

An associate of former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez has been indicted as an accessory after the fact in the alleged murder with which Hernandez has been charged.

Carlos Ortiz, 27, of Bristol, Conn., was indicted Friday by a Massachusetts grand jury in connection with the June 17 killing of Odin Lloyd, CNN.com reports.

Hernandez pleaded not guilty earlier this month to first-degree murder in the execution-style shooting death of Lloyd.

Ortiz will enter a not guilty plea to the accessory charge, his lawyer, John Connors, said.

Prosecutors say Ortiz originally told them that Hernandez and another co-defendant, Ernest Wallace, got out of a car with Lloyd at a deserted industrial park shortly before Lloyd was allegedly murdered. But Ortiz now says that Hernandez and Lloyd got out of the car alone.

Connors said it is not unusual for a witness in a case like this to change his story.

"He's a young guy who got caught up in a situation, and when all this came about, he was frightened and confused, as you can imagine anyone would be," he said of Ortiz.

NBA star Lamar Odom breaks silence via Twitter

    By Associated Press on September 25th, 2013 @ 2:32am

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Lamar Odom is breaking his silence with his first post on Twitter since the NBA star was arrested and charged with driving under the influence last month.

Odom tweeted ?Seeing the snakes? on Tuesday night in his first post since his Aug. 30 arrest.

He followed with an extended tweet from his verified account that referenced his estranged father.

?Won?t continue 2 speak on this but I have got 2 let this out real quick. I have let this man and many others get away with a lot of (expletive). He wasn?t there 2 raise me. He was absent ALL of my life due to his own demons. My mother and grandmother raised me. Queens raised me,? Odom tweeted.

He went on to credit the family of his wife Khloe Kardashian for being ?the ONLY ones that have been here consistently 4 me during this dark time. Only person 2 blame is myself. Say what you want about me but leave the ones who have done nothing but protect and love me out of this! This goes out to everyone!?

Odom has been mostly silent on Twitter for nearly three months, although on July 12 he tweeted in part, ?Wifey is real,? a reference to Kardashian.

Odom, who played for the Los Angeles Clippers last season, is a free agent and has yet to sign with a team. NBA training camps open next week.

School board president Tony Moore arrested in alleged tire theft scheme

Tony Moore - File photoTony Moore

Federal Way School Board President Tony Moore was indicted in Oregon on seven counts of felony theft and faces a maximum of 10 years in prison if convicted.

Moore is accused of scheming with a tire company employee in Portland, Ore., to steal more than $150,000 in semi-truck tires in 2012, according to the Seattle Times. A grand jury indicted Moore on Aug. 23, the report said.

Moore was arrested Sept. 17 at SeaTac Airport as he boarded a plane to Amsterdam on a trip sponsored by the school district. He was released from King County Jail on Sept. 20 after posting a $50,000 bond.

On Wednesday, Moore told The Mirror that the allegations are false, and that he will remain on the school board. He has hired an attorney. The date of his arraignment is unknown at this time.

"I am innocent of the accusation and charges so I'm going to do what innocent people do and defend myself," said Moore, 49. "I have been accused of a crime that I did not commit."

Moore is owner of William A. Moore Jr. Inc., a tire wholesaler based in Federal Way.

Tracy E. Holmquist, Moore's alleged co-conspirator who worked at GCR Tire Centers in Portland, is currently being held in jail in Multnomah County on seven charges of aggravated theft. Public information about his arrest indicates Holmquist has been in custody since late May.

Moore said his company stopped doing business with GCR in 2011. In their relationship, Moore visited the store to salvage used tires, which he would retread for his business. According to the Times, Moore is accused of stealing newer tires between March and October 2012 through an arrangement with Holmquist.

For now, Moore said he has no plans to resign from the school board. He was appointed to the board in 2008, and was re-elected in 2011.

"I do not want to become a distraction to the great work that's being done in Federal Way," Moore told The Mirror. "The moment my issue becomes a distraction, then I will resign without hesitation."

Moore, a Republican, narrowly lost to Tracey Eide (D) in the 2010 race for State Senate. In 2012, he ran for District 30 state representative, but lost in the primary.

At the time of his arrest, Moore was about to embark on a taxpayer-funded trip to Europe with Superintendent Rob Neu and three other school board members. At a cost of $50,000, the trip included stops in England, Scotland and Finland as part of the school district's Global Initiative Project. According to Neu, "this initiative will ensure our students are prepared for a more competitive, diverse and interconnected world than the one we grew up in." From April 10 through May 1, Moore and Neu traveled to China at a cost of $33,350.

Neu sent the following statement to The Mirror:

"We were recently made aware of the situation involving Tony Moore. We?ve been informed that the allegations do not involve Tony?s responsibilities as a board member in the Federal Way School District. We have no further information regarding this situation at this time."

HTC may face US Android import ban over two Nokia patents

HTC faces a possible import ban over several Android devices after finding itself on the wrong end of a preliminary ruling by the International Trade Commission (ITC) over two Nokia patents.

On Monday, the ITC released its initial determination over three patents in a complaint Nokia filed against HTC in May last year, in conjunction with separate complaints against RIM and ViewSonic.?

The ITC found that HTC had infringed Nokia's patents 7,415, 247 and 6,393, 260, but found no violation of a third patent number 5,884,190.?

Since the ITC can only offer injunctive relief rather than damages, the court has offered Nokia an avenue to block certain HTC devices from being sold in the US.

According to Reuters, Nokia has asked the ITC to ban included HTC Amaze 4G, the Inspire 4G, Flyer, Jetstream, Radar 4G, Rezound and Sensation 4G.

Nokia also filed a second complaint against HTC at the ITC in May this year aimed at the Taiwanese company's flagship device, the HTC One, adding to separate suits across Europe and Germany.?

"Nokia is pleased that the initial determination of the ITC confirmed that HTC has infringed two of our patents. Local counterparts of one of these are also already in litigation against HTC in London, UK, Dusseldorf, Germany, and Rome, Italy. We will reserve further comment until we have had the chance to study the judgment in detail," a Nokia spokesperson told ZDNet.

Patents expert Florian Mueller notes that both Nokia and HTC can petition the ITC for a review of findings that were not in their favour, adding that a possible outcome is that HTC takes a licence for the patents from Nokia.

Nokia's devices and services business is set to be acquired by Microsoft in a ?5.4bn deal, while Nokia will retain 30,000 patents from that business which will be licensed to Microsoft on a non-exclusive basis for the next 10 years.?

HTC is also one of dozens of Android devices makers that have signed up to Microsoft's Android licensing agreements.?

HTC declined to comment on this story.

Kids get protection from paparazzi in California

Halle Berry and Jennifer Garner helped lead the fight to change legislation in California, saying they and their children were harassed by paparazzi.

    AP

Halle Berry and Jennifer Garner helped fight to change California law, saying they and their children were harassed by paparazzi.

A California bill aimed at keeping paparazzi away from the children of celebrities and supported by film stars and parents Halle Berry and Jennifer Garner was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown on Tuesday.

Brown, a Democrat who dated rock singer Linda Ronstadt during his first stint as California governor in the 1970s, approved the measure without comment.

The California Newspaper Publishers Association and other groups had opposed Senate Bill 606, which increases penalties for harassing children because of their parents' job, on the grounds that it could restrict reporters and photographers covering the news.

The penalties for harassing children of celebrities would increase from a maximum of six months in jail to a maximum of one year. Potential fines would increase to $10,000, from the current $1,000.

The bill got a boost when Hollywood moms Berry and Garner testified on its behalf at a California legislative hearing in August.

An emotional Garner told a California Assembly Committee that she and her children were followed everywhere they go.

"How often do we see a tragedy unfold and say, 'Oh, there were so many warning signs. Why didn't anybody pay attention?'" Garner, who has three children with actor-director Ben Affleck said at the time. "I am asking you as a parent to pay attention."

CEDAR RAPIDS ? A little under one year removed from a state appearance, ?Xavier?s boys? golfer team has high hopes and expectations to further its success by winning the state championship.

?We have to have strong team chemistry to make it to state again,? senior Matt Junge said.

One way the team builds team chemistry is by participating in events outside of meets and practices.

?On meet days, to stay focused and energized, the team eats at the Spring House restaurant,? senior Ben Sagers said. ?On our way to meets, we listen to relaxing music to calm our nerves.?

The Saints were 34-17 heading into this week and ranked eight in Class 4A. Junge is ranked fourth in the state individually.

?In my seven years as the golf head coach, I have never had someone ranked so high,? Tim O?Brien, head golf coach, said.

The Saints participated in the Mississippi Valley Conference Super Meet at Airport National, finishing with a score of 263 and in fourth place out of 14.

China lifts ban on Facebook, Twitter

London, Sep 24 (IANS) Authorities in China have lifted the ban on Facebook, Twitter, and the New York Times sites in the Shanghai Free-trade Zone so that foreign companies feel more at home, The Independent reported.

?In order to welcome foreign companies to invest and to let foreigners live and work happily in the free-trade zone, we must think about how we can make them feel like at home,? reported the South China Morning Post citing government sources.

?If they can?t get onto Facebook or read The New York Times, they may naturally wonder how special the free-trade zone is compared with the rest of China.?

The Shanghai free-trade zone has been recently approved by Chinese authorities and will be formally launched Sep 29.

Spanning an area of about 29 sq km, it is one of the more than a dozen free trade zones ? specially designated areas within China with relaxed economic and government policies ? aimed to encourage foreign investment.

HackMaster iPad/Tablet Optimized Form-Fillable PC Sheet for Non-Casters

    Description:

This is an alternative to the free HackMaster Form Fillable PC sheet. It has been optimized for full-screen viewing on tablet devices, specifically the iPad. While the original sheet was designed to print out on a single sheet it worked out reasonably well on the iPad?.assuming you were OK with seeing the front & back sheets together and the interior two pages together.

The original PC sheet was made specifically for my own use and simply shared with those who might want to use it. There were a number of specific feature requests and inquiries, along with a few gripes and complaints about my personal layout ?not being good enough?.

In revisiting the idea of a form-fillable HackMaster PC Sheet I wanted something large enough to view one page at a time on my iPad, but something I could still print out for use at the table.

Highlights of this Form-Fillable PC Sheet:

    • The pages are 2048-by-1536 resolution at 264 pixels per inch (ppi) for viewing on a tablet.
    • When printing for pen & paper use simply select ?Fit to Printable Area? under Page Scaling (Adobe Acrobat) or ?Fit? under Size Options (Adobe Reader). It should print out at around 140%.
    • Usable with the Free Adobe Reader or your favorite PDF program.

Problems with this Form-Fillable PC Sheet:

    • Technically this sheet is usable as a form with Adobe Reader for iPad, but it is extremely slow. I?ve had much better luck using paid third party programs.

There are three different versions of this PC Sheet: the ?full? 8 page version suitable for multi-classed spell-casting types, and two different 6 pages versions for casters and non-casters. The bundled zip file contains all three copies. The three versions are for those users who might not have the ability to edit PDFs to remove pages.

This version is made specifically for Non-casters (Fighters, Thieves, Etc).?Purchase the Bundle for all three sheet-types!

A brief overview of the pages, using the ?full? version as the example:

    Page 1

Page 1 is an overview page showing basic character information, stats, saves, hit points, wounds, and a couple different combat profiles.

    Page 2

Page 2 is a comprehensive listing of skills, talents, and proficiencies. There is plenty of room to add in new skills and places to mark off which skills have been used since last level.

    Page 3

Page 3 is an equipment listing where things are broken down into combat load, carried load, and packed items. There is room for coins & treasure as well as a place to keep track of your PC?s total weight under various load-outs.

    Page 4

Page 4 is a memorized/prepared spell listing as well as a place to track spell points.

    Page 5

Page 5 is a sheet to track all known spells per level.

    Pages 6-8

Pages 6-8 are extra combat profiles, ranged weapon tracking, and space for ?The List?.

This version is missing pages 4 & 5 in order to condense the size of the overall file (and they aren't needed).

Mall security measures reassessed in wake of Kenya terrorist attack; Bo Xilai sentenced to life in prison; typhoon kills 25 in China; dozens dead in attack on Pakistani church; Obama calls for new action on gun violence; and more

Top of the Agenda: Kenya's Mall Standoff Continues

Terrorists from Somalia's al-Qaeda affiliate al-Shabaab stormed an upscale mall in Nairobi this weekend, killing nearly seventy people and taking an unknown number of hostages in what appears to be their final standoff with Kenyan military forces (AP). Al-Shabaab has been routed in Somalia after Kenyan forces entered the troubled country, but the group's cross-border attack demonstrated a resiliency that alarmed Washington (NYT). The deadly attack on the high-end shopping mall has raised new questions on safety at malls around the world, and changes to security procedures are being considered (Reuters).

    Analysis

"Time has come for ensuring that our intelligence gathering systems factor in the Kenyan realities of corruption, tribalism, and the manual nature of our criminals. In other words, our security systems must be designed to anticipate and address the ailments that haunt our national way of doing things," John Walubengo writes in the Daily Nation.

"Since 2011, Kenyan forces allied with Uganda and a handful of other African countries have fought to re-establish Somalia as a bona fide country, ruled by a functioning central government providing a modicum of social services and security to its people. To a surprising degree it has succeeded. It has driven Al Shabab's warlords out of the capital and major cities," Michael Meyer writes in the New York Times.

"[A]s the Westgate atrocity suggests, the radicalization of al-Shabaab under its new hardline leadership may make the final push towards normalization in Somalia the toughest challenge of all. The terrorists are divided and losing ground. But they seem determined to go down fighting," Simon Tisdall writes in the Guardian.

Hotspotio App lets users trade WiFi and 4G speeds for Facebook likes

Hotspotio App lets users trade WiFi and 4G speeds for Facebook likes

A brand new app has just arrived on the Google Play Store this afternoon after an initial testing phase earlier this year, and it?s called Hotspotio. What this essentially does is let users share their 4G connection or WiFi hotspot in return for favors or Facebook likes.

    hotspotio

It?s an interesting concept, and one we?ll have to watch to see if it catches on. Instead of paying a fee for WiFi in a coffee shop or hotel, imagine just using Hotspotio to sign in and get free high-speed internet. You won?t pay a fee, you?ll just have to like them on Facebook, or share a Tweet about them instead. Not bad right?

The app handles everything so you won?t need to share or try and explain long complicated passwords, and they even claim their system is more secure, which is extremely important when you?re freely sharing WiFi. The point here being Hotspotio will help businesses and users share their network access, and in return ask for hugs, a free beer, or even Facebook likes.

I can just imagine a bartender requiring girls to give him a hug in return for access on their WiFi through Hotspotio. That?s what the company is saying at least, they mention this specifically. These favors or likes can be earned by friends, customers, friends of friends, or even strangers. Anyone who wants to do you a favor, or use your WiFi and 4G LTE. Weird, we know. The app just arrived for Android, and you can try it now for free from the Play Store.

Malcolm Berko: NextEra Energy is compelling long-term buy

    Dear Mr. Berko:
My wife, my three youngsters and I might move to Miami. I've been offered two positions at 35 percent more than I'm making now, but we're reluctant to move because we'll be so far from both our parents and family members. But believe it or not, we're both die-hard Dolphins and Marlins fans (long story), which would make the move more tolerable. What can you tell me about NextEra Energy, which is one of the two companies that might hire me? I might even buy 100 shares for my individual retirement account. ? LP, Oklahoma City

Dear LP: NextEra Energy is one of the best "foreign" utilities I know of. In another lifetime, long, long ago, it was called Florida Power & Light. NextEra Energy (NEE-$80) serves 9.2 million people in a fast-growing 27,600 square-mile service area, encompassing southeastern Florida ? where Spanish is often the preferred form of communication, the schools stink and the crime rate is off the charts.
