Former police union president charged

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Ex-cop Filiberto 'Joey' Sigala was suspected of pilfering money when he ran Albuquerque's police officers' union, and now he's accused of taking money for work he didn't do.

Union members had called for an audit of how Sigala handled union funds.? New Mexico State Police now allege Sigala lied to his fellow cops and paid himself for work he never did.

The trail of events goes back to the December 2011 DWI arrest of then-Albuquerque Police Department Officer Steven Miller when Sigala was still president of the Albuquerque Police Officers Association.

According to court documents, Sigala paid himself $400 for work related to Miller's arrest, but Sigala, "never went to the scene of the arrest and never took any action concerning the Miller incident."

When Sigala suddenly resigned as president in March 2012, union members called for an audit of how he paid himself.

The external audit was completed last year and was handed over to State Police.

Current APOA President Stephanie Lopez says they believe Sigala siphoned off thousands of dollars of his fellow officers' money for expensive meals, groceries and golf.

"Through the course of that investigation, there were several amounts that were questionable in his spending itself, but nothing that was definitively proved," Lopez said.

This isn't Sigala's first run-in with the law.

In May 2012 he was arrested for allegedly roughing up his wife while in uniform. Sigala, an eight year vet of APD, was fired that summer. The case was dismissed in December when Sigala's wife didn't show up for court.

When Sigala was arrested last year, his wife had an Electronic Benefits card. The state has never said if she was qualified to have the card , which accesses state assistance benefits like unemployment compensation and food stamps.

State Police say their investigation into Sigala's handling of union funds isn't over.
