1. Go Big

Never go with a small fish tank. Its unfair to the fish and it is unfair to you. A small fish tank doesn?t give enough room to most fishes. Even if you start with a guppy or goldfish. Start your hobby with a 20 ? 30 tank. This will be sufficient for a few fishes and will give you a good start into the hobby.

2. 1 Inch Rule

Most beginner fish-keepers should know this already. The 1 inch rule. Basically for every 1 inch of fish ? in terms of size ? you will want to have 1 gallon of water in the tank. So if your fish is 3 inches they would take 3 gallons of your tank. Keep this ratio in mind when purchasing your first few aquarium pals.

3. Bacteria

Its okay to have a bit of bacteria floating in your fish tank. You just don?t want it overflowing it. Bacteria can be useful to fishes and the tank ecosystem itself. So why destroy something? If you aren?t sure what is enough, visit a forum and ask your fellow fish-keepers.

4. Feeding

Like humans fishes like to eat different things when possible. Try to feed your fish different types of food. The pellets you buy at any pet store is fine, but you could also consider some types of plants or worms.

5. Fact Check

When you buy a fish you should know a few things about it. What levels of pH can it survive? How much water does it need in the tank? Is it an aggressive or passive type? Doing research on your pets will do you wonders. You will know what to feed them, how to design your aquarium, and how to keep them healthy and happy.
