How to Teach Language to Dogs

Julie and Chaser (and a blue ball)

AFTER A LONG DAY of being a dog, no dog in existence has ever curled up on a comfy couch to settle in with a good book. Dogs just don?t roll like that. But that shouldn?t imply that human words don?t or can?t have meaning for dogs.

Chaser, a Border Collie from South Carolina, first entered the news in 2011 when a Behavioral Processes paper reported she had learned and retained the distinct names of over 1,000 objects. But that?s not all. When tested on the ability to associate a novel word with an unfamiliar item, she could do that, too. She also learned that different objects fell into different categories: certain things are general ?toys,? while others are the more specific ?Frisbees? and, of course, there are many, many exciting ?balls.? She differentiates between object labels and action commands, interpreting ?fetch sock? as two separate words, not as the single phrase ?fetchsock.?

Fast forward two years. Chaser and her owner and trainer Dr. John Pilley, an emeritus professor of psychology at Wofford College, appeared again in a scientific journal. This time, the study highlighted Chaser?s attention to the syntactical relationships between words, for example, differentiating ?to ball take Frisbee? from ?to Frisbee take ball.?

I?ve been keeping an eye on Chaser, and I?ve been keeping an eye on Rico, Sofia, Bailey, Paddy and Betsy, all companion dogs whose way with human language has been reported in scientific journals. Most media reports tend to focus on outcomes: what these dogs can ? or can?t ? do with our words. But I think these reports are missing the point. Learning the names of over 1,000 words doesn?t just happen overnight. What does the behind-the-scenes learning and training look like? How did Chaser develop this intimate relationship with human language?

Recently, I had the pleasure of making Chaser and John Pilley?s acquaintance when they visited New York City for their forthcoming book, Chaser: Unlocking the Genius of the Dog Who Knows a Thousand Words, out 10.29.13 (Facebook/Twitter). I sat down with Pilley to discuss Chaser?s initial training and learning and to pose questions offered up by readers of Dog Spies (Twitter /Facebook) and Do You Believe in Dog? (Twitter /Facebook). Pilley did most of the talking, and Chaser contributed too, periodically bringing me a Frisbee and sticks of various sizes to throw. As Pilley says, ?Learning builds on learning,? so here?s what I learned from our conversation about the early building blocks of Chaser?s education:

Chaser is known for her extensive vocabulary. Can you walk us through how she came to learn the names of over 1,000 different objects?
Because learning depends upon learning, it helped to have her first learn certain simple behaviors, most of which were obedience behaviors like sit, stand, stay, and drop. She also learned herding commands like ?way to me?, ?come by,? ?there,? ?freeze,? ?walk,? ?go out,? and ?crawl? among others. I used positive reinforcement, and in the beginning, I used food when she came to me. I gradually phased out the food.

When I started teaching the name of objects, I said, ?Watch Pop Pop? and would show her the object and say, ?This is Frisbee,? and I would hide the object just two feet away, so at that point, it wasn?t really hidden. When she went looking for it, I would keep saying, ?Find Frisbee, find Frisbee,? and when she mouthed it I would say, ?Good dog! Good dog!? Then we made it more difficult, and I would really hide it out of her sight.

That was the procedure. A couple of times a day, I would play with her with that object for five minutes or so. No other objects would be on the floor, and we would play with that object, and I would profusely repeat the name of that object between 20-40 times in each session. ?Find Santa Claus, Find Santa Claus,? and then, ?Good dog! Good dog!? when she mouthed it. That was the first step in teaching her the names of proper nouns.

After the first object was taught, it was set aside, and we worked on another one. She always learned one object at a time, a successive method of teaching. Before Chaser, we had tried a simultaneous method of teaching with other dogs [presenting two objects at a time], and that didn?t work.

As Chaser learned the names of different objects, how did you test what Chaser was learning? Did you have a way to assess her initial and long-term memory?
After a few weeks, it was time to test Chaser. The criteria for learning was that she had to successfully select a particular object out of 8 other objects. My criteria was not just that one test. We replicated it at least 8 times, and the items surrounding the object of interest would be different from what she had seen in earlier presentations. She had to be successful in each of those independent sessions 8 times in a row. If she was successful on the first 6 but missed on the 7th, I stopped the testing and put the object aside and worked with it some more. Then I would start the testing some more.

In addition to testing her initial learning of objects, each month we tested her memory on all of the objects that she had learned up to that point. We did it in sets of 20. I put 20 objects on the floor, using only objects which she had shown initial learning, and we asked Chaser to retrieve each of the 20 objects. Over the course of 3 years of teaching, Chaser was successful in retrieving 90% of the objects correctly. Most of the time she retrieved 100% of the objects and other times 95%, but it never got below 90%. If she was not successful, I put that object aside for additional training. The reason we tested her each month was we wanted to make sure that she was not learning new objects to replace an old object. We wanted to be sure that there was complete retention in the long term.

How about grammar? What were the general training and testing procedures?
Chaser initially learned actions independent of specific objects. I might be holding a piece of food, and I would say, ?Take.? Over time, she learned the three commands, ?take,? ?paw,? and ?nose?? and they were later applied to different objects. The first step in grammar is two elements like, ?Take Lamb,? and Chaser demonstrated that each word had an independent meaning. I like to say that learning builds on learning. Not until she learned the two elements should she learn three elements. When she heard the phrase, ?Take ball to Frisbee,? she was successful three fourths of the time. But she seemed to act on the last thing she heard, so we changed the expression to ?To ball take Frisbee.? We also tested the inverse, ?To Frisbee take ball.? This work tests her syntax, her understanding of the rule. When we invert it, we?re demonstrating semantics, that she actually understands each of those components of the sentence and the different meanings of the words.

Can you talk about the use of play in Chaser?s learning and training?
Tension, fear and anxiety inhibit creative learning, and play and tension are incompatible. During play, creative learning can take place. If you are going for complex learning, you are not going to get any learning with tension and anxiety; I?ve learned that in over 30 years of teaching. One of the things that runs throughout the entire book, Chaser: Unlocking the Genius of the Dog Who Knows a Thousand Words, is that play is one of the secrets of Chaser?s learning.

Most people don?t explicitly teach their dog words, yet they think that the dog understands many words. Do you think this assumption could ever be problematic?
As long as this doesn?t result in some kind of negative response like criticism or punishing the dog, it could be innocuous. It could have a negative impact on the dog if someone thinks a dog should know a word or phrase and holds it against the dog if he doesn?t seem to be performing. The best and simplest assumption is that if a dog is not emitting a behavior, then the dog might not understand.

Does knowing words and syntax help Chaser have a ?happier? life with humans?
I think when you have more understanding, there is better communication and thereby more happiness.

What do you hope people take away from Chaser?s story?
The big thing is that Chaser is not special, and that anybody?s dog is smarter than he or she thinks. I?m hoping people will work with their dogs, of course teaching them words, but also getting to know their dogs. Find out what makes your dog happy, and give your dog opportunities to explore its interests.

Felony Friday: Police Dogs Placed In Class Above Privately Owned ...

Starting November 1st of this year it will be a felony in the state of NY to kill a police dog. This gives New York similar laws to Florida and Texas, which already have similar penalties in place for harming or killing a police animal.

We already have a class system in our society which places politicians, crony capitalists, and police officers above common folk; do we want to curse animals with a similar system? If we examine the topic of animals killed when a police officer is present, we will quickly realize the critical issue, is not protecting animals owned by the State. The animals that need protected are those owned by private citizens, which have increasingly become the victims of the police mantra, shoot first and ask questions later. Unfortunately, this growing problem is of no concern to those that draft and enforce laws.

Summer Astrobiology Roundup #2: Possible `Comet Of The Century' Starts Warming Up

Enhanced Hubble Telescope image of ISON from April 2013, showing a dusty tail and some evidence of volatile sublimation around the nucleus (NASA, ESA)

Back in February these pages discussed a newly discovered long-period comet, ISON (otherwise known as C/2012 s1), that is falling sunwards for what is probably its first passage through the inner solar system later this year ? on a beautiful near parabolic orbit. At its closest point it will pass a mere 700,000 miles from the solar surface, on November 28th 2013.

Pristine cometary nuclei, volatile rich lumps, offer the best chances of flaring into spectacular forms as they near the Sun. And ISON might be a biggie, or it might just be, well, ordinary. Regardless of the display it eventually puts on, like any new cometary body it?s a veritable treasure trove for science.

Images of ISON at 3.6 and 4.5 microns (infrared). Left panel shows fine dust in a tail pointing away from the Sun. Right panel shows the glow of neutral gas, likely CO2, that is sublimating off the warming nucleus (Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/JHUAPL/UCF)

Images taken by NASA?s Spitzer Space Telescope over a month ago show the infrared glow of dust and carbon dioxide already pouring from ISON into a tail more than 180,000 miles long. This translates into a daily production of some 2.2 million pounds of gaseous carbon dioxide and about 120 million pounds of dust. That may sound impressive, but at roughly 3 miles across ISON?s nucleus is estimated to weigh as much as 7 trillion pounds, and even after it rounds the Sun it might end up shedding no more than about 10% of its total mass ? assuming it remains intact during that close pass.

But, by studying the composition of the material being shed, we gain insight to some of the fundamental building blocks of our solar system (and perhaps even other solar systems). Comets can carry some remarkably complex organic chemistry, the kind of ?prebiotic? mix that may have existed on the surface of a youthful planet Earth.

Right now ISON is a little more than 2.7 times further from the Sun than the Earth (you can track it with this neat calculator). It?s worth keeping an eye on its progress, since humans may never witness it again.

A plea for iOS 7 status bar sanity

A plea for iOS 7 status bar sanity

There's not a pixel on the screen that iOS 7 won't be changing come this fall, including the status and menu bars that have lived on top of iPhones and iPads for years. Dave Wiskus, designer of Vesper, has weighed in on that specific change, and what the repercussions might be. From Better Elevation:

iOS 7 unifies the status bar and navigation bar, with mixed results. There are no longer any lines or markings of any kind between the status bar (carrier, time, battery status), and an app?s navigation control buttons. This new area is a collection of unrelated items occupying a single space. A jumbled, confusing mess that will lead to third-party apps looking terrible and users wondering what the hell is going on.

What makes this so infuriating is that the status bar was a solved problem. The black bar at the top is hardware at best, and OS information at worst. Now Apple has taken an OS-level design problem and made it an app-level design problem.

Dave has filed an entry in Apple's bug reporter, radar. While things like iOS 7's new physics and particle engine have met with near universal delight, the paint on top of it has been far, far more divisive, especially among designers, and not without good reason. Part of an interface's job is to visually parse information for a user, to give it structure and in iOS 7 parlance, "clarity". Simplicity can help clarity, but taken to an extreme, becomes null, which is anything but clear. Hopefully, as Dave says, this new design language is evolving and what might have been overly torn down gets built back into balance.

Check out the rest of his post, and let me know what you think.

British drug giant, GlaxoSmithKline admitted that some of its executives in China appear to have violated Chinese law in a bribery and corruption scandal which has hit the firm.

GSK is being investigated by Chinese police for alleged corruption, price fixing.

"Certain senior executives of GSK China who know our systems well, appear to have acted outside of our processes and controls which breaches Chinese law," Abbas Hussain, GSK's international president said in a statement.

(Read More: China Syndrome: Crackdown on foreign firms no coincidence)

GSK is the latest in a string of multinationals to be targeted by Chinese authorities over alleged corruption, price-fixing and quality controls.

Chinese police last week accused GSK of bribing officials and doctors to boost sales and raise the price of its medicines. They said GSK transferred up to 3 billion yuan ($489 million) to 700 travel agencies and consultancies over six years to facilitate the bribes. Four senior Chinese executives from GSK have been detained. Britain's biggest drugmaker has said it was deeply concerned by the allegations, which it called "shameful".

Chinese police have detained four China-based GSK executives and have prevented Steve Nechelput, the firm's finance director from leaving the country.

The pharmaceuticals firm said it had "zero tolerance for any behavior of this nature" and would overhaul its operations in China. That would help make its medicines more affordable to Chinese patients, it said.

"I want to make it very clear that we share the desire of the Chinese authorities to root out corruption wherever it exists. We will continue to work together with the MPS (Ministry of Public Security) and we will take all necessary actions required as this investigation progresses," added Hussain.

Chinese police have also visited the Shanghai office of British drugmaker AstraZeneca, following allegations against GlaxoSmithKline.

An AstraZeneca spokeswoman said on Monday that police had visited on Friday and took away one employee for questioning.

"We believe that this investigation relates to an individual case and while we have not yet received and update from the Public Security Bureau, we have no reason to believe it's related to any other investigations," she said.

"AstraZeneca is committed to acting with integrity at all times and in all of our operations and interactions around the world. AstraZeneca adheres to high ethical standards in the pharmaceutical industry, and does not tolerate any illegal or unethical conduct in our business activities," she added.

Egypt panel starts amending constitution despite ... - World News

Female Egyptian supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood hold up portraits of Egypt's ousted president Mohamed Morsi during a rally in Cairo on July 21, 2013. Supporters of Morsi, who has been held in custody since his ouster on July 3, view the army's decision to overthrow the man they voted into power last year as an affront to democracy.

By Maggie Fick and Crispian Balmer, Reuters

CAIRO ? A panel of legal experts started work on Sunday to revise Egypt's Islamist-tinged constitution, a vital first step on the road to fresh elections ordered by the army following its removal of Mohammed Morsi as president.?

Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, which has accused the army of orchestrating a military coup and denounced plans to revise the constitution, staged fresh rallies on Sunday to maintain pressure on the new, interim government.

Setting a highly ambitious time frame, the military wants new elections in about six months and has tasked a panel of 10 legal experts to present proposed changes to the constitution within 30 days for review before a broader-based body.

The original constitution was approved by a referendum last year, but critics said the text failed to protect human rights, minorities and social justice.

Ali Awad Saleh, a judge and the constitutional affairs adviser for the newly installed president, chaired Sunday's panel, saying it would spend the next week receiving ideas from "citizens, political parties, and all sides."?

Khaled Dawoud, a spokesman for the opposition umbrella National Salvation Front, called the start of the committee's work "a very positive development."?

The Muslim Brotherhood has shown no sign it is ready to engage with the new administration or the army, sticking firmly to its demand for the full restoration of Morsi, who has been held in an undisclosed location since his downfall on July 3.

A few thousand women, children and men marched from the site of a round-the-clock, pro-Morsi vigil in a Cairo suburb on Sunday, moving to within sight of the defense ministry, ringed by barbed wire and protected by well-armed security forces.

"Why, Sisi why, why did you kill our sisters?" the crowd chanted, referring to General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the defense minister who played a central role in forcing Morsi from office following mammoth street protests against the Islamist leader.

More than 100 people have died in violent clashes this month, including three women taking part in a pro-Morsi rally in the Nile Delta town of Mansoura on Friday.

CONSTITUTIONAL DOUBTS

Despite the continued domestic turmoil, the new government is trying to show the world that business is returning to normal in Cairo, with the foreign minister meeting Ahmad Jarba, the head of the opposition Syrian National Coalition.

Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy told reporters on Saturday that Egypt remained committed to seeing change in Syria, but said the government was reviewing a decision by Morsi to cut all diplomatic ties with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Trying to burnish their democratic credentials, the Egyptian military has said the new constitution should be put to a referendum before planned parliamentary elections.

However, some analysts have expressed doubts about rushing to revise the text given the lack of political consensus that has clouded Egypt's faltering transition to democracy in the wake of the 2011 removal of veteran autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

"The problem is not amending or drafting the constitution, the problem is deciding the direction the country is headed," said Zaid Al-Ali of International IDEA, a Stockholm-based intergovernmental organization.

"Unless political agreement is reached between all of the major political actors in the country, we are going to head from one crisis to another," he said.

Many of Egypt's Arab allies have welcomed Morsi's demise and rushed to prop up the nation's wobbling finances.

Egypt's central bank said on Sunday it had received $2 billion in funds from Saudi Arabia, the latest installment of a $12 billion aid package pledged by Gulf Arab states.

The Egyptian stock exchange rose to a seven-week high on Sunday, encouraged by a lack of violence at weekend "anti-coup" protests in Cairo, hoping it indicated tensions are calming.

However, violence continued in the Sinai peninsula, where three members of Egypt's security forces were killed on Sunday by armed men. Islamist militants in the area have vowed to attack army and police targets there until Morsi is reinstated.

Egypt's minister of supplies, Mohamed Abu Shadi, told Reuters the government had moved swiftly to boost supplies of wheat to prevent any destabilizing bread shortages for the country's 84-million-strong population.

Abu Shadi said Morsi's government had made "incorrect calculations" regarding stocks, adding that these were "based on guesses, not on facts."?

Morsi was Egypt's first freely elected leader, but during his one year in office he drew criticism for failing to revive the ailing economy, restore security or build institutions. The Muslim Brotherhood say they were repeatedly thwarted by remnants of Mubarak's old government and forces hostile to them.?

PLYMOUTH (WWJ) ? The Concours d?Elegance kicks off Sunday in Plymouth ? where?beautiful, classic and exotic automobiles will be on display.

On Wednesday, WWJ attended a special preview with car owners and organizers of the event.

Caroline Overst, of Grosse Pointe, is a Product Specialist for Nissan. She talked about the vintage gown she wore that matched the era of the cars on display:

?A lot of the gowns were actually made to match the vehicles for a lot of the classic shows so they would work with designers to kind of take key elements of the car, whether it?s the color or the material ? so it would really reflect that in the gown so it?s a wonderful, natural tie-in,? said Overst.

Gary Riddell of South Lyon will show off his 1936 three window Ford Coupe, flat head, V-8 engine. He spoke with WWJ about how honored he is to be a part of the invitation only event.

?It makes you feel very good, somebody appreciates that kind of work that you put into a car like that ? it takes hours and hours to do it,? said Riddell.

He tells WWJ that he?s been working on it for about seven years.

The Concours d?Elegance moved from the?grounds of historic Meadow Brook Hall at Oakland University in 2011.

The concours moved to the newly restored Inn at St John?s at 44045 Five Mile Road in Plymouth.

Online Resources When Faced with a Foreclosure - RealEstate.com

Foreclosure has been running rampant over the past five years since the recession that began in 2008. It has stabilized to somewhat manageable levels, but millions of Americans are still facing foreclosure each year. Some are able to climb out of the hole that they have found themselves in, but others aren?t as fortunate.

If you find yourself in the latter group, and you?re on the verge of facing foreclosure, there are many ways to get help quickly. With an Internet connection, you are just a few clicks away from the necessary assistance.

    Freddie Mac Foreclosure Resource Center

There are online resources for homeowners facing foreclosureFreddie Mac has an online foreclosure resource center devoted to helping homeowners who are facing a foreclosure. You can find out if you are eligible for a refinance, which will modify your payments into something more manageable, either for the short term or long term.

On top of repayment assistance, other options provided on Freddie Mac?s site include enrollment in the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) and lists of foreclosure attorneys in your area. Pay close attention to this website as there are many links and large databases of information that can be useful for many people facing a foreclosure.

    USA.gov Foreclosure Resources

The U.S. government also offers some great foreclosure advice online. For example, it encourages homeowners to contact their lenders instead of ignoring them. Ignoring your lender will only lead to foreclosure because it shows the lender that that you will not make a good faith effort in modifying your loan. Contacting your lender also makes it more likely that you will be able to stay in your home ? if you abandon your property, you may not qualify for assistance.

This government site will also provide you with scams to look out for and avoid. Fake programs exist that are trying to take advantage of homeowners who are desperate in their time of need. Programs to avoid include lease-back or rent-to-buy scams that ask you to transfer the title of your home. Under no circumstance should you do this, as it will only set you up for failure. Also, look out for fake government programs. These programs are easy to spot as they will ask for fees; real government assistance programs will not charge you any fees.

    HUD Programs

Finally, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development offers many good links at their site. You can find out how to enroll in programs and get answers to questions you may have when faced with foreclosure. This site will explain all of the ways that you can modify and refinance your current mortgage for a more affordable payment. It also gives you options no matter what type of situation you are facing. Whether it?s unemployment, an underwater mortgage, FHA-insured mortgages or managed exit plans, there?s no scenario that isn?t covered by the HUD.

Now that you are aware of the programs and resources that are offered online, take a look. Every possible scenario is covered on these sites to help you avoid losing your home.

From the same country that brought you Andy Murray in Lego form comes Andy Murray: The Postage Stamp.

The Royal Mail ? yes, even their postal service has a cool name over there ? has released a set of Andy Murray postage stamps:

They go on sale August 8 and will cost ?3.76 for a set of four. You can buy them here if you want a souvenir or have business across the pond.

The web site refers to the images as "dramatic," which is open to debate.

    Israel to free Palestinian prisoners

    2013-07-20 20:02

Jerusalem - Israel announced on Saturday it will release some Palestinian prisoners as a "gesture", after the two sides agreed to lay the groundwork to resume peace negotiations frozen for three years.

Some of those to be freed have been in prison for decades, Israeli Intelligence Minister Yuval Steinitz said.

His announcement came hours after US Secretary of State John Kerry said Israeli and Palestinian negotiators had agreed to meet to pave the way for a resumption of direct peace talks.

The last round of direct talks broke down in 2010 over the issue of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.

Speaking on privately owned Channel 2, Israeli Justice Minister and chief peace negotiator Tzipi Livni noted that while there were no preconditions to talks, "everything will be on the table", including the 1967 borders and east Jerusalem, which the Palestinians want as their future capital.

Steinitz said his government would engage in the staggered release of a "limited number" of prisoners, some of whom he defined as "heavyweights", who have been in jail for up to 30 years.

    4 713 imprisoned

"There will definitely be a certain gesture here", he said, without noting how many prisoners were to be freed.

According to Israeli rights group B'Tselem, at least 4 713 Palestinians are imprisoned in the Jewish state.

Their release is one of the Palestinians' key demands for resuming peace talks, particularly the 107 prisoners arrested prior to 1993, when the Oslo peace accords were signed.

An Israeli official said no prisoners would be released before direct talks begin, and the process would then be dependent on the Palestinians proving they are "really serious and not playing games".

"It won't happen tomorrow and not next week," the official told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity. He could also give no indication of the number of prisoners involved.

He said the releases, once they begin, would take place in stages and include "pre-Oslo prisoners, prisoners set to be released anyway, and those the Palestinians 'forgot' during the Oslo accords".

    Commitment

Steinitz said Israel would not compromise "diplomatic issues", and that there was no agreement on a settlement construction freeze or on accepting the borders that existed prior to 1967 Six-Day war as the basis for talks, as the Palestinians demand.

He said the Palestinians had committed to "negotiate seriously" for "at least nine months", during time which they would refrain from taking action at the United Nations and other international institutions.

Kerry gave away very little detail of the agreement, which came after four days of consultations with Israeli and Palestinian leaders, saying both sides had reached "an agreement that establishes a basis for resuming direct final status negotiations".

"This is a significant and welcome step forward," he added, having doggedly pushed the two sides to agree to resume talks in six intense trips to the region since becoming secretary of state in February.

A State Department official said Kerry had wrenched a commitment from both sides "on the core elements that will allow direct talks to begin".

The Israelis and Palestinians remain far apart on final status issues including the borders of a future Palestinian state, the right of return of Palestinian refugees and Jerusalem.

    'Ball in Israel's court'

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas has also repeatedly called for a freeze to Israeli settlement building and a prisoner release.

"The ball is now in Israel's court," a Palestinian official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"Kerry has proposed the bases for a resumption of negotiations and asked [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu to respond favourably to one of them.

"The bases are the release of Palestinians jailed before the Oslo accords, minors, the sick or the elderly," he said. "And that Israel recognise the 1967 [border] lines as a reference point, or a halt to settlement building."

The official said Netanyahu had agreed to hold a special cabinet session to draw up Israel's response to Kerry's proposals.

The Islamist Hamas movement which runs the Gaza Strip rejected a return to talks, saying Abbas had no legitimate right to negotiate on behalf of the Palestinian people.

And the leftist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine warned that "a return to talks outside the framework of the United Nations and its resolutions would be political suicide".

Thousands remain evacuated as Southern California wildfire burns

Evacuations are underway as a wall of fire approaches the town of Idyllwild, Calif. The blaze is so large it can be seen from space. Six miles away from the fire, in Palm Springs, it was raining ash, leaving fine particles in the air. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

By Greg Risling, The Associated Press

IDYLLWILD, Calif. - A Southern California wildfire that destroyed seven homes and cabins in the mountains above Palm Springs grew overnight and continued to threaten the town of Idyllwild Friday as crews kept an eye on an advancing thunderstorm.?

The fire in the San Jacinto Mountains grew to around 24,818 acres ? roughly 39 square miles ? and was 15 percent contained, U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Kate Kramer said.?

About 6,000 people remained evacuated for a third day as the fire spread in three directions amid the rugged, timbered ridges. Some communities on the eastern edge of the fire were reopened to residents, but about 4,100 homes remained under potential threat.?

The fire was only about two miles from Idyllwild on its western flank and the same from Palm Springs, down below on the desert floor. However, it was burning relatively slowly with the most active area south of town.?

An enormous plume of smoke could be seen from Palm Springs.?

Popular campgrounds, hiking trails and a 30-mile section of the Pacific Crest Trail that runs from the Mexican border to Canada, remained closed.?

Some 3,300 firefighters, aided by nearly 30 aircraft, battled the fire, which stretched from 4,000 feet to 9,000 feet along the mountains. For that reason, crews could be working in temperatures ranging from a comfortable 75 to a scorching 110 degrees.?

    /

Dry conditions fuel blazes in the U.S.

Kramer said a storm front was heading toward the region, bringing a 20 percent chance of rain but also 15-24 mph winds with gusts to 40 mph that could push the flames in erratic ways.?

"That's the double-edged sword of having a front move in," she said. "It can cause some very unpredictable weather."?

The fire, which began Monday afternoon, has burned six homes and mobile homes, one cabin, and more than a dozen other buildings. One home also was damaged.?

Idyllwild resident Dave Jones was back in his Southern California home on Thursday, a day after evacuating, but remained ready to leave.?

The walls were bare in the home where he's lived for the past 40 years after the 64-year-old and his wife stowed the valuable mementos, along with more practical items, like clothes, jewelry, medicines and the computer hard drive before heading to their son's home in nearby Hemet.?

"The fire came right up by the ridge yesterday afternoon, gave everybody a pretty good scare that it was going to come down the hill," Jones said Thursday night.?

The last time he evacuated for a fire it was 1997, and he stayed away for four days. Jones said he considered the order he got Wednesday "a light evacuation" and wasn't afraid because he knows of a controlled dirt road to use as "an escape route" if fire does come down that ridge.?

Authorities said the fire was "human-caused" but they wouldn't say whether it was accidental or intentional. There have been no reports of any injuries.?

The fire was about 12 miles from the site of the 2006 Esperanza wildfire that killed five U.S. Forest Service firefighters and destroyed 34 homes and burned an area that hadn't burned in many years.?

AG moves against Texas law firm, accused of aiding ?patent trolls?

Attorney General Jon Bruning has launched an investigation into whether a Texas law firm has violated Nebraska law.

The Attorney General?s office says Farney Daniels LLP of Texas has sent multiple letters to Nebraska businesses, threatening lawsuits over patent infringements. The office says the law firm sent the letters on behalf of ?patent trolls?, companies that buy groups of patents solely to threaten infringement of the patents they buy.

??Patent trolls? make egregious threats with little or no valid legal purpose to gain fast money,? said Bruning in a written statement released by his office. ?It is a top priority of our office to protect Nebraska consumers and businesses from this sort of baseless harassment.?

Bruning has issued a Cease and Desist Order and Civil Investigative Demand to the law firm.

Bryan Farney of Farney Daniels released this statement in wake of the Attorney General?s action:

Farney Daniels is a firm of experienced patent lawyers who represent a wide range of plaintiffs and defendants across the nation in intellectual property cases, from Fortune 500 companies to individual inventors.

We firmly believe that a strong patent system is vital to the U.S. economy, and are proud of our service to that system and to our clients.

While the Nebraska Attorney General may have concerns about the U.S. patent system and how it works, or with particular types of patent owners, we are confident that any fair investigation will conclude our firm has lawfully and honorably represented our clients in upholding their rights.

A Drone Fell From the Sky and Exploded Next to a Florida Highway

For the second time this month, a drone (this one presumed to be a QF 4) has come spiraling out of the sky. The crash and subsequent explosion happened next to US 98 near Tyndall Air Force Base in?oh what a surprise?Florida.

Art installation brings you face to face with fracking

Fracking hell or fracking bliss? Fracking Futures, an art installation at Liverpool's FACT gallery, gives visitors a chance to decide what they think of this controversial gas extraction technique. Its miniaturised fracking "rig" simulates the sounds, tremors and flames that a real one might produce, and appears to drill right through the gallery floor.

Extracting gas from deep shale deposits by fracturing them ? using a high-pressure mix of water, sand and chemicals ? is a hot topic. For the last decade the US has been fracking hard and fast, and many other countries look set to follow suit. Interest is swelling in the UK, and the British Geological Survey recently released a report estimating that the north of England has around 35 trillion cubic metres of shale gas buried underground ? enough to supply the country for decades.

So what would it be like to have a fracking rig in your back yard? Put on your hard hat and enter the darkened gallery, and you immediately experience a sense of unease. The noise hits you hard, a pounding rhythmic bass sending vibrations right through you. Suddenly the red rig lights up and the drill rotates down through the rubble-strewn floor. The noise crescendoes, like a jet taking off, and metallic hammering accompanies the sinister smoke rising out of the drill hole. And then, as quickly as it started, it all stops. Forlorn bird cries ring out across a pool of effluent, and random methane flares hit you with a dry wall of heat.

    Not taking a stand

It is a powerful dystopian vision, though the Paris-based duo behind it, HeHe, claim not to be making judgements for or against fracking, but merely trying to stimulate discussion. "We want to create an emotionally engaging experience. People can go away and come to their own conclusions," says Heiko Hanson, who makes up HeHe together with his partner, Helen Evans.

The exhibit is particularly relevant to local people. Just down the road a real fracking rush looks set to start. Fracking fields around Blackpool have recently been boosted by investment potentially amounting to ?160 million, and consent is being sought to set up seven new fracking test sites in north west England, in addition to currently active Elswick site.

And the exhibit plays to local concerns: contaminated water supplies, fracking-induced earthquakes, methane leaks, noise, dust and dirt. But how realistic are these fears? Unbiased evidence is hard to come by, but the few peer-reviewed studies carried out indicate that the risks fracking poses to human health and the environment are small. A two-year study of fracking wells in Los Angeles, conducted by consultants Cardno Entrix and funded by the oil industry, monitored 15 environmental factors, including vibrations at the surface and methane release before and after fracking operations, and concluded that fracking caused no significant change to any of them. And a recent joint report by the Royal Society and Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK concluded that most of the known instances of contamination, such as groundwater contamination in Pavillion, Wyoming, and the fracking-related earthquakes in Texas, were due to poor practice, and that the risk of accidents is small if fracking is properly managed.

    Climate question

Fracking is undoubtedly noisy and messy, but to focus purely on the process seems misguided: the more compelling issue is its impact on climate change. Fracking has made carbon emissions fall in the US, because gas-fired power stations emit less than half as much carbon dioxide per kilowatt-hour of electricity generated as coal-fired ones. Some argue that fracking provides a bridge to a future focused on renewable energy.

But methane leaks could undo these benefits, and a switch to shale gas could simply increase our dependency on fossil fuels and lock us into a high-carbon future. That really would be fracking hell.

Fracking Futures is one of the exhibits at FACT Inside Out, which runs until 15 September
