Christie warns he?ll return ?Jersey style? if Iowans don?t vote Romney (The Ticket)

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa--Chris Christie came to Iowa on Friday, not as a 2012 presidential candidate, as many Republicans in the state had hoped, but as Mitt Romney's most high-profile surrogate in the final days before Tuesday's first-in-the-nation caucuses.

More than 100 people turned out before daylight in the parking lot of a Hy-Vee supermarket, standing for more than an hour in high winds and a steady drizzle to see Romney and Christie, the governor of New Jersey.

Dressed in a pinstripe navy blue suit, Christie was greeted like a celebrity by the bundled-up masses, some of whom rushed outside to see the governor after taking refuge inside their cars against the harsh winter morning.

Christie bluntly put forth what has become Romney's main talking point: That President Obama has failed to deliver on the hope and change he promised as a candidate four years ago.

"The president is going to try to convince you somehow that he deserves to be rehired," Christie said. "Well let's be real clear, real clear: President Barack Obama came out to Iowa three years ago, and he talked to you about hope and change. Well let me tell ya, after three years of Obama, we're hopeless and changeless, and we need Mitt Romney to bring us back, to bring America back."

Playing off his persona as a New Jersey tough guy, Christie issued a mock warning.

"New Jersey's watching you ? We're watching you real closely," he said. "And I want to tell you something. I want to tell you something really clearly. I'm in a good mood this morning. I'm feeling happy and upbeat. I'm happy to be with Mitt and Ann. But let me tell ya, if you people disappoint me Tuesday, if you don't do what you're supposed to do on Tuesday for Mitt Romney. I will be back, Jersey-style."

Afterward, as Christie moved through the crowd toward Romney's bus, a man called out, "I wish it were you!" Christie smiled, but did not respond.

Christie, who was elected in 2009, long insisted he wouldn't seek the presidency but briefly entertained the idea in the fall after several Republicans?including a group of top party operatives in Iowa?urged him to reconsider. But in October he again ruled out a run and endorsed Romney.

Christie is hitting the road with Romney's wife, Ann, on Friday for several events in Iowa, as Romney travels to New Hampshire for a handful of campaign events. Romney is set to be back in Iowa on Saturday night and has planned 10 events around the state in the closing hours before Tuesday's caucuses.

Syrian troops kill 9 protesters despite monitors

(CBS/AP)?

BEIRUT - Arab League monitors spent a second day in the Syrian city of Homs Wednesday gathering accounts about the government's crackdown on dissent as troops in nearby Hama opened fire on thousands of unarmed protesters and killed at least six, according to activists.

Though President Bashar Assad's regime has made some concessions to the observers, including the release of nearly 800 prisoners on Wednesday, the military at the same time is pressing ahead with a violent campaign to put down mostly peaceful protests. Activists said at least 39 people have been killed in the two days since the monitors began work.

The continuing violence ? and comments by an Arab League official praising Syrian cooperation ? have fueled concerns by the Syrian opposition that the Arab League mission is a farce and a distraction from the ongoing killings.

Complete Coverage: Anger in the Arab World

"This mission has absolutely no mandate, no authority, no teeth," said Ausama Monajed, a member of the Syrian National Council, the country's main opposition group. "The regime does not feel obliged to even bring down the number of casualties a day," he told The Associated Press.

The 60 Arab League monitors ? the first Syria has allowed in during the nine-month anti-government uprising ? are supposed to be ensuring the regime is complying with terms of a plan to end the crackdown on protests. The U.N. says more than 5,000 people have been killed in Syria since March.

The plan demands the government remove its security forces and heavy weapons from city streets, start talks with opposition leaders and allow human rights workers and journalists into the country. It calls for the release of all political prisoners.

The government released 755 prisoners following a report by Human Rights Watch late Tuesday accusing authorities of hiding hundreds of detainees from the monitors. It was the second concession in two days to the Arab League.

Syria frees 755 detained in crackdown

Human Rights Watch, however, accused Syrian authorities of hiding hundreds of detainees from the observers now in the country, reports CBS News' George Baghdadi. The New York-based international watchdog said the detainees have been transferred to off-limits military sites and urged the observers to insist on full access to all sites used for detention.

On Monday, the army pulled some of its troops back from the city of Homs after bombarding it for days and killing scores of people. It allowed the monitors to visit and as they came, tens of thousands of protesters poured into the streets, chanting calls for the execution of Assad.

In the week after signing on to the Arab League plan on Dec. 19, the regime stepped up the crackdown and killed hundreds of people. The opposition suspects that Assad is only trying to buy time and forestall more international sanctions and condemnation.

The Arab observers kicked off their one month mission with a visit on Tuesday to the central city of Homs, a city at the heart of the uprising. Several from the team of 12 stayed in the city overnight, and the team continued work there Wednesday. There was no word on whether other teams went to different cities.

According to officials and activists, the monitors went to several districts including trouble spots in Baba Amr, Bab Sbaa and Inshaat. Amateur video posted on the Internet showed the head of the team, Sudanese Lt. Gen. Mohamed Ahmed Mustafa al-Dabi, walking in Baba Amr and stopping to talk to people.

In one video, he is seen talking to a man who accuses the regime of killing his 64-year-old brother, a former official of Assad's ruling Baath party, and his wife, and then blaming it on armed gangs.

"Your excellency, they are killing influential people to draw a violent reaction from people," he tells al-Dabi.

Earlier Al-Dabi said the day went "more than fine," reports CBS News' Baghdadi.

"I can tell you that the second day was alright and I can also say that I have noticed the existence of armed groups in the city," al-Dabi told Addunia Syrian private TV in a televised statement.

Some amateur video showed the orange-jacketed observers in a white car, surrounded by people shouting for Assad's downfall and apparently objecting to the presence of a Syrian military escort in the car with them.

Other video showed the monitors visiting women and children who purportedly lost family members in recent violence.

There were no reports of firing on protesters in Homs during the observers visit on Wednesday. Troops did open fire on the crowds on Tuesday.

Images obtained by the AP from Homs in the days leading up to the monitors' visit show army defectors inside a bombed out building, firing machine guns through gaping holes in an outer wall. In another, a huge crowd fills the street for a nighttime demonstration behind a giant banner of the uprising's revolutionary flag. A row of women at the front are wearing the flags and a large banner overhead reads: "All the doors are closed except your door, God."

There are also graphic images of wounded civilians lying on a floor in pools of blood, and being treated with crude medical equipment. Another shows an alleyway dotted with puddles of fresh blood. At a protest on Dec. 21, a banner reads: "To the Arab League: Your initiative cannot protect us from death." Young girls with headbands that read "Leave!" and sashes calling for the "execution of Bashar" protest under banners of "Freedom and Dignity."

The images testify to the intensity of the opposition to Assad's regime that brought on a brutal offensive against Homs from Friday until the monitors arrived on Tuesday morning. For days, government forces relentlessly shelled the city and killed scores.

On Thursday, the monitors are expected to visit Hama, Idlib and Daraa ? all centers of the uprising.

In Hama, several thousand protesters were trying to reach the city's main Assi square to stage a sit-in amid a heavy security presence when troops opened fire with bullets and tear gas to disperse them, activists said.

Hama-based activist Saleh Abu Kamel told The Associated Press he had the names of six people who were killed and many other wounded in the shooting. The number could not be immediately confirmed.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees confirmed the protests and the shooting, giving conflicting casualty figures.

Violence erupted in several other parts of the country. Activists reported two deaths in the Baba Amr district of Homs, one who was shot by a sniper and another who died from wounds sustained a day earlier. An 18-year-old boy was shot at as he returned from a protest in the southern city of Daraa, and at least four soldiers were also killed in an ambush by a group of military defectors in the country's south, activists said.

They said at least nine civilians were killed on Tuesday and 30 on Monday.

Despite the ongoing crackdown, an Arab League official said cooperation by Syrian authorities with the monitors was "reassuring."

"The Syrian side is facilitating everything," Adnan Issa al-Khudeir told reporters in Cairo. He said the 60 observers who arrived in Syria Monday were divided into five groups to visit five locations: Homs, Aleppo, Idlib, Daraa and Hama.

Monajed, the SNC official, said the remarks were "unfortunate."

"They reflect the irresponsible behavior and attitude toward the massacres and atrocities committed by Assad's forces in the country," he said.

Oil hovers below $100 amid low holiday volume (AP)

SINGAPORE ? Oil prices hovered below $100 a barrel Tuesday in Asia amid low holiday week trading volume.

Benchmark crude for February delivery was down 11 cents at $99.57 a barrel at early afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 15 cents to settle at $99.68 in New York on Friday.

In London, Brent crude was up 15 cents at $108.11 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Global oil trading markets were closed Monday for the Christmas holiday.

Crude briefly popped above $100 on Friday amid growing evidence the U.S. economy is improving. Some analysts say concerns that Europe's debt crisis will trigger a recession on the continent next year will overshadow any positive news out of the U.S. this week.

"We don't expect this strength to be maintained this week given a likely shift in focus back toward the eurozone where major debt issues remain largely unresolved," energy consultant Ritterbusch and Associates said in a report.

Because many traders are on vacation this week, trading volume is sharply lower and a few trades could jolt prices.

"Volume will be thin through this abbreviated week," energy consultant and trader The Schork Group said in a report. "As such, the potential exists for some wild swings."

In other Nymex trading, heating oil rose 0.8 cents to $2.91 per gallon and gasoline futures were steady at $2.68 per gallon. Natural gas futures were down 2.9 cents to $3.09 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Couple's wedding day in 1936 rocked by blast

It was after 9 p.m., and Ida Mae Hansen and Loyal Kolbrek had been married for about three hours.

The wedding took place in her parents? home at 14th Street and Duluth Avenue. Guests ? mostly their brothers and sisters and in-laws ? had finished the wedding feast and were chatting. The bride?s father already had gone to bed.

Five miles to the east, a stranger?s life was coming to an end, and his girlfriend was being beaten cruelly with a hammer. Then several bullets were fired into her body.

Finally, a match was held to the end of a 10-foot fuse attached to a stick of dynamite. The three assailants then hurriedly left the building, a powder house for a hardware store.

A minute ticked away, then another.

But when the explosion came, it shook the area for miles and brought an abrupt end to the newlyweds? simple wedding reception.

Almost 75 years later, Loyal and Ida Mae Kolbrek still recall the power of the explosion.

?At first, I thought it was shivareeing,? Ida Mae says, referring to the noisy mock serenade that once saluted newly married couples.

?We didn?t have any children at our reception. People had left the babies at home. They all just rushed home to make sure the babies were all right.?

The newlyweds also left the Hansen house at 520 S. Duluth Ave., wondering what had caused the house to shake and plaster to fall on a sleeping family member.

It wasn?t until the next day they learned about what came to be known as the Powder House Blast.

They also learned there had been a survivor.

According to a history by the Minnehaha County Historical Society, the blast occurred at 9:35 p.m. The powder house held 310 25-pound kegs of gunpowder, more than 3,000 pounds of dynamite and a man who was unconscious, if not already dead.

The crater left behind measured 50 feet in diameter and was 25 feet deep. Hundreds of windows were broken within a 40-mile area, residents more than 60 miles away heard the blast, and it registered on seismographs in California.

The powder house was on property owned by Fred and Freda Dawley, where the Dawley Farm Village sits today. The historical marker erected in 2002 was removed when roadwork took place, and the state does not want it replaced, says Bruce Blake of the county historical society.

Floyd H. Parker died in the blast. He was a paroled California convict who met Helen Sieler, 25, who was living in Sioux City, Iowa.

He also met gang members Lee Bradley and Harry ?Slim? Reeves, also ex-convicts, and barkeeper William Nesbit.

The four men conspired with a Sioux City jewelry wholesaler to stage a burglary of his business. The wholesaler would keep the jewels and split the insurance proceeds.

The sham burglary was botched, however, and the gang split up. When Parker demanded money, the other three men drove him and Sieler to Sioux Falls. When they reached the powder house, Bradley attacked Parker, then they assaulted Sieler.

The three men fled, but a slow-burning fuse allowed Sieler time to escape from the building and crawl more than 100 yards to a ditch, allowing her to survive the explosion. Neighboring farmers found her and took her to Moe Hospital, where it was found she had eight bullet wounds.

A thumb from Parker?s body was found in February and identified through a fingerprint. Bradley, Reeves and Nesbit were sentenced to lengthy prison terms.

All this Ida Mae and Loyal Kolbrek would learn later. But the timing of their wedding and the Powder House Blast has been a constant in their anniversary celebrations for almost 75 years.

They officially celebrated this diamond jubilee with a family gathering earlier this month.

?We thought it was great,? Ida Mae says, then adds, ?I said it was a real blast.?

Loyal and Ida Mae were born in Gregory County. He was the son of a homesteader who lived near Fairfax; she lived in Fairfax until a poor economy put her father, an implement dealer, out of business.

The family moved to Sioux Falls when she was 12. Loyal?s father, a farmer, also moved his family to Sioux Falls. Their fathers knew each other, and the families ended up living across the street. Loyal and one of Ida Mae?s brothers became friends.

And Loyal remained just one of her brother?s friend for several years. They both attended Hawthorne School. Loyal quit in eighth grade and began working at John Morrell & Co. for 20 cents an hour. Ida Mae went on to Washington High School.

Both of them dated other people, including, for Ida Mae, a boy she knew in Fairfax.

About the time she graduated from college, however, something changed, although neither one recalls an official first date.

?He was good looking,? Ida Mae says of her future husband. ?He had a lot of curly hair, tall and slender. It?s the way you do. You just like them better than someone else.?

The couple estimates they were engaged for three months before their wedding day. He bought her a diamond; she had a white dress for the wedding. Someone hung a honeycombed tissue paper bell for them to sit under for a photograph.

It was a quiet, low-key wedding for a couple whose first home was a room in her parents? boarding house. They went on to raise four children, Dennis of Cross Lake, Minn.; Jan of Nashville, Tenn., and Pat Pickard and Jim, both of Sioux Falls. They have 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Loyal estimates they moved 39 times in their married life. Today, they live at Trail Ridge.

They may go out to eat on their anniversary, but unless by some fluke, the outing won?t include a trip downtown to marvel at all the broken windows and wonder what caused it.

?That was quite a thing to happen in a little town,? Ida Mae says.

Libyans clash with former regime loyalists, 2 dead

(AP) ? A resident of a city in western Libya says at least two people were killed after gunmen ransacked a home in search of a regime figure once loyal to Moammar Gadhafi.

Basem al-Tarhoni says angry residents in Tarhouna retaliated by torching the headquarters of some 100 fighters who helped topple the longtime leader from power.

Tarhouna was widely seen as a Gadhafi favorite, and its dominant tribe, also called Tarhouna, held many positions in the Libyan military. The city's residents are viewed with suspicion by former rebels.

Such clashes are a major challenge for Libya's new rulers.

The clashes took place on the same day security ministers announced a program for integrating former rebels in civil institutions. The ministers gave few details and offered no timetable for disarming fighters.

Shaheen?s second year as mayor an eventful one

WARNER ROBINS -- Warner Robins Mayor Chuck Shaheen and City Council members openly admitted in December 2010 that their first year together was chaotic. They pledged 2011 would be a fresh start.

But at their first council meeting this year, they argued. Four voted to dismiss longtime City Attorney Jim Elliott, as he sat nearby. Three days later, and after public outcry, councilmen reinstated Elliott.

Despite that rough start, Shaheen has reached the halfway mark of his term with a year that saw progress on major projects and in council relations.

With three new council members taking office in the new year, he and the current councilmen are hoping for even more progress in 2012. Terms for Councilmen Tom Simms Jr., Bob Wilbanks and John Williams end Dec. 31.

?I believe this new council -- we?re going to have a vision of how to move Warner Robins forward to the year 2040,? Shaheen said.

RDA reformation aids LEC project

Shaheen?s year started with a slight change in the way councilmen voted.

In much of 2010, Shaheen?s ideas tended to receive a 4-2 vote, with Councilmen Mike Daley, Daron Lee, Paul Shealy and Wilbanks voting together.

This year, Lee -- who served as mayor pro-tem -- began to cast his vote more often in agreement with Simms and Williams, leaving Shaheen as the deciding vote. Lee recently said he decided to work more cohesively with the mayor.

?Whatever my decision was, whether I was pro or against what the mayor said, that would be behind closed doors,? Lee said. ?But in the public?s eye, even if I didn?t agree, we acted professionally.?

One of the first decisions that showed the tide change was an April vote to reform the Redevelopment Agency board, which oversees most of the city?s major projects. Shaheen argued replacing mayor and council on the board with residents would ?take politics out of business decisions.?

Shaheen cast the deciding vote for the reformation when Daley, then the chairman of the board, Shealy and Wilbanks voted against the measure.

The reformation of the board made way for progress on the Law Enforcement Center, Shaheen said. One of his goals was to move forward on projects that had stalled for years before his term began, including the police headquarters.

The project had been discussed for years. In 2010, City Council settled on the Watson Boulevard and First Street location after considering two others. This year the building was redesigned, the property acquisitions were finalized and most of the needed land has been cleared.

?With this new RDA board under Gary Lee (the RDA executive director), we have taken politics out and put progress in,? Shaheen said, adding ?there?s no way? the project would be as far along if mayor and council were still on the board.

Shealy and Wilbanks recently said the new board has made tremendous strides, but they stand by their original votes. Daley did not mention the RDA in an e-mailed statement for this story.

?The people elected mayor and council, and I think there?s a responsibility there,? Shealy said. ?I think we could?ve represented the people a little better.?

Other projects

Also this year, the Georgia-Robins Aerospace Maintenance Partnership project received its needed finding of No Significant Impact from Air Force Materiel Command.

?G-RAMP had been talked about for 10 years before me,? Shaheen said. ?And we got that done in a year. That?s progress.?

The project is proposed to be a public-private partnership to include maintenance hangars for use by Robins Air Force Base, which local leaders say could bring thousands of jobs to the area.

But where the project goes from here is uncertain. Shaheen announced at a recent state-of-the-city address that he doesn?t think the city ought to be in charge of building the project, mainly because of the multi-million dollar price tag and the needed manpower. He proposed City Council review options to either give the land to Robins Air Force Base or sell it to a developer.

Daley and Shealy have said they agree other options should be considered in the new year now that the environmental assessment has shown the land is viable for the project. Williams also agreed but said it could be a hard sell.

?I just don?t know if a private contractor is going to want to do it,? Williams said.

Wilbanks said Shaheen?s proposals for G-RAMP are yet another example of the mayor going against City Council decisions. The project is a win-win for the city, Wilbanks said.

?Now, all of a sudden, he wants to sell that land to a developer,? the councilman said. ?The situation that we had out there -- we had the land, we build it up, we prepare it and the contractors come in and we benefit (from) the revenues and we benefit (from) the job creations. Why would we give that up??

Another project that progressed this year was a wastewater treatment plant extension. City Council voted this month to seek $28.5 million in bonds to fund the project, which will increase the capacity from 9 million gallons of wastewater per day to 12 million.

The expansion will not only lay the groundwork for future residential growth but also will attract industry, Shaheen said.

After laying new and replacing old sewer lines throughout the city this year, Shealy said, the plant expansion is the next big infrastructure necessity.

?That?s for the future,? he said.

In addition, Shaheen said he pushed to complete road projects earmarked for 2001 and 2006 special purpose local options sales tax funds, including those for Margie Drive, Willie Lee Parkway and North Davis Drive.

Lessons learned

Shaheen said some hard lessons were learned this year, specifically in communication. Both the mayor and councilmen said better communication was at the foundation of the calmer council relations.

For his part, Shaheen said he took advice from some Warner Robins? ?forefathers,? including former council members and interim mayors Henrietta McIntyre and Clifford Holmes.

?When you get new people in, it takes a little while for them to gel,? said Shealy -- who, along with Daley and Lee, joined council at the same time as Shaheen. ?We?re really just regular town folks; you don?t have the seasoned politicians.?

A lack of communication was the reason council blindsided Elliott at its first meeting, Lee said. Elliott was given no prior notice his job was on the line. Though specifics weren?t given regarding the brief termination, councilmen have said the issues they had have been discussed and resolved.

?Once you know better, you do better,? Lee said, adding he later apologized to Elliott. ?There are some things that we probably should have given a second thought.?

Shaheen, city engineers and public works employees also were schooled this year on being environmentally friendly when -- after a months-long investigation -- the Georgia Environmental Protection Division found permitting violations for work done at Bay Gall Creek.

The city was fined $50,000 and placed on a year probation. Shaheen said the investigation revealed some requirements he and city employees were unaware of.

?They were really understanding of where we were going,? Shaheen said of the EPD.

The councilmen agreed Shaheen, a former pharmaceutical salesman who had little political experience before running for mayor in 2009, has learned more about being the city?s leader.

?I think he?s learned a lot. I think he?s matured some,? Wilbanks said. ?I still think he?s going to have a challenge working within the city charter.?

Wilbanks said, as he has several times before, that Shaheen has a habit of ignoring majority votes he does not agree with. Wilbanks pointed to a sports complex that has not been built.

Shaheen has said he would like to see the complex, which previous councils have said would bring softball tournaments to Warner Robins, redesigned and moved from the approved location just northwest of the intersection of Russell Parkway and Ga. 247.

Wilbanks said Shaheen should follow through with the plans City Council approved at least 10 years ago.

Daley also mentioned Shaheen?s ability to follow through with majority votes in an e-mailed statement.

?The mayor has a big job and a huge responsibility,? Daley wrote. ?He is the chief executive officer and is responsible for the efficient administration of all the affairs of the city over which he has jurisdiction. However the M&C (mayor and council) is the governing body of the city of which the mayor is one of the members with the same powers as any one of the other six members and the M&C by majority vote set the direction of the city.?

Looking forward

The councilmen interviewed for this story all agreed Shaheen?s second year was better than the first. However, they said the third will be the best yet because the mayor has learned the ropes and three new councilmen are entering the picture. Simms did not respond to interview requests.

Carolyn Robbins, Mike Brashear and Mike Davis will be sworn in Dec. 29. They are replacing Simms, Wilbanks and Williams, respectively. Much unity is expected of these three, especially since they are replacing two councilmen who generated headlines for quirky and combative behavior. Williams is facing one federal and one Houston County Superior Court indictment, and it?s a rare occasion Wilbanks shies away from an argument.

?It?ll be that much better because you have a little camaraderie? with the new council members, Shealy said.

The three recently were challenged with quashing an argument between Shaheen and Wilbanks over the implementation of a payroll study. Instead of the tension that was present at the final precouncil meeting, the year?s last regular meeting ended with a 7-0 vote in which a compromise had been made.

Council approved a measure that said a payroll adjustment would be made -- as Wilbanks wanted -- but did not lock the city into a specific plan -- as the mayor wanted.

?I saw the incoming council and the ones already in council (who are returning) working hand-in-hand, and it really made me feel good? about being voted out, Williams said. ?We had oil and water on there for two years, and it didn?t mix.?

The continuing councilmen agreed next year should be a new start.

"Eck's Factor": Weekly Analysis for Dec. 23, 2011

Here are my takes on the noteworthy developments in WWE over the past week:

Talking point: Daniel Bryan cashes in his Money in the Bank contract and wins the World Heavyweight Title at TLC

Eck?s Factor: I have to admit that I was among the people who suspected that Bryan was going to be the first person to cash in a MITB contract and not win the title, so it was a pleasant ? and shocking ? surprise when Bryan successfully cashed in on The Big Show moments after Big Show had defeated Mark Henry for the championship in a Chairs Match. Who would have ever dreamed that Internet darlings (and I don?t mean that as an insult) Bryan and CM Punk would be the holders of WWE?s two most prestigious championships? As part of the fallout from the turn of events at TLC, we now have a compelling story with Bryan and The Big Show, who finally ended his nine-year world title drought only lose it to his little buddy Bryan about a minute later.

John Cena faces down Kane for the second time on Raw SuperShow, 12/19/11Talking point: Kane attacks John Cena again on Raw

Eck?s Factor: Well, now we know that Cena wasn?t just in the wrong place at the wrong time when Kane attacked him on the Dec. 12 episode of Raw. Kane applying a menacing clawhold to Cena?s face and Cena selling it with a rare look of fear made for a strong segment on this past Monday?s Raw. I like the twist of having Kane return as a heel to have a program with Cena rather than doing the predictable thing of Kane seeking revenge against Mark Henry, the man who put him on the shelf for five months. It?s unclear at this point what Kane?s beef is with Cena, but I?m definitely intrigued. Despite the fact that Cena and Kane have been in WWE together for nearly a decade, their paths have rarely crossed, so the matchup feels fresh.

Talking point: CM Punk walks out of TLC still WWE Champion

Eck?s Factor: Punk, The Miz and Alberto Del Rio stole the show at Sunday?s pay-per-view with their TLC Triple Threat Match for the WWE Title. With John Cena out of the title picture for now, Punk has a great opportunity to show that he can be ?The Man,? and if TLC is any indication, he is well on his way to doing so. I had my doubts as to how entertaining TLC would be without Cena, but the show more than delivered and Punk had a lot to do with that. On a side note, kudos to Ricardo Rodriguez for taking the biggest bump of the night ? a 20-foot fall from the top of a ladder through a table on the floor.

Talking point: Zack Ryder finally wins the U.S. Title from Dolph ZigglerZack Ryder celebrates with his broskis after winning the U.S. Championship at WWE TLC 2011

Eck?s Factor: I became a Ryder fan years ago during his time in ECW, but I always believed he was an entertaining mid-carder and an underrated worker and nothing more. After witnessing Ryder?s breakthrough victory live at TLC in Baltimore, however, I?ve officially joined the Ryder Revolution. He and Ziggler had an outstanding match and the crowd was incredibly hot for Ryder. I?m a big proponent of Ziggler getting a main-event push, but last Sunday was Ryder?s time and he is deserving of a run as the U.S. Champion. I give Ryder a ton of credit for taking the initiative when he was an afterthought in WWE and working hard to get himself over. Could 2012 be The Year of the Broski? I wouldn?t bet against him.

Talking point: Triple H destroys Kevin Nash in a Sledgehammer Ladder Match

Eck?s Factor: Due mostly to Nash?s physical limitations, a number of fans and pundits were skeptical of whether the former Kliq members could put on an entertaining match at TLC. With Triple H in there, however, I wasn?t really worried about the match quality, and I also had a feeling that Nash would rise to the occasion ? and he did. Nash taking a bump off a ladder and through a table certainly was unexpected, and a beaten-down Nash flashing the Kliq sign right before Triple H clobbered him with the sledgehammer was a nice touch. If the match turns out to be Nash?s swan song in WWE, he went out on a good note.

Wade Barrett tosses a table at Randy Orton at WWE TLC 2011Talking point: No end in sight for Randy Orton-Wade Barrett rivalry

Eck?s Factor: Orton defeated Wade Barrett in a Tables Match at TLC, but that certainly didn?t end their feud. The next night on Raw, Barrett returned the favor by putting Orton through a table. I?m glad the issue between Orton and Barrett remains unsettled. The program is elevating Barrett, who is proving once again that he has what it takes to be a big-money player, and it also seems to be re-invigorating ?The Viper.?

Talking point: Mr. Belding campaigns to be Raw GM

Eck?s Factor: Yes, it?s true. Following the lead of his favorite WWE Superstar Zack Ryder, Mr. Belding (aka actor Dennis Haskins) of ?Saved by the Bell? fame is pushing an online petition on Twitter (@mrbeldingforrawgm/principle) to become the general manager of Raw. I wonder what the Executive Vice President of Talent Relations and the Interim General Manager of Raw John Laurinaitis thinks about this. As far as iconic TV principals go, my guess is that Laurinaitis is more of a Mr. Woodman guy. I actually think Haskins, who is a longtime WWE fan, would make a decent GM. He certainly couldn?t be any worse than Mike Adamle, and he?d definitely be less annoying than fellow wrestling fan and former ?Saved by the Bell? castmate Dustin ?Screech? Diamond. I?d be happy to sign the petition on one condition: Haskins has to bring Elizabeth ?Jessie? Berkley along as his personal assistant.

?

Disclaimer: The views expressed in ?Eck?s Factor? are those of Kevin Eck alone and do not necessarily reflect those of WWE.

WHO IS KEVIN ECK?

For those who are unfamiliar with me, I come to WWE from The Baltimore Sun, where I was an assistant sports editor and the author of a pro wrestling blog titled Ring Posts. In between two stints with The Sun, I worked as the editor of WCW Magazine from 2000 to 2001.

Understanding The Grid-Scale Energy Storage Boom

It was a banner year when grid-scale energy storage began to grab headlines as a number of demonstration projects moved from the drawing board to operational reality. Examples include a 20 MW frequency regulation plant that Beacon Power commissioned in Stephenstown, New York, shortly before seeking bankruptcy protection; two power reliability systems that Ener1 (HEV) agreed to supply for the 2014 Winter Olympics; projects from A123 Systems (AONE) that smooth minute-to-minute variability in the power output from wind farms; micro-grid projects from ZBB Energy (ZBB) that provide power quality, reliability and cost management benefits for remote naval bases and other facilities; and a behind-the-meter system from Axion Power International (AXPW.OB) that provides a combination of power quality, reliability and cost management benefits for Axion's New Castle plant while generating third-party revenues by providing frequency regulation services to the PJM Interconnection.

Each of these projects is an important technical milestone in its own right, but they're only the tip of the iceberg. While Lux Research forecasts that sales of grid-scale energy storage systems will reach the half-billion mark next year, the sector is expected to grow to $1.5 billion a year by 2015 and potentially represent a $200 billion revenue opportunity. The problem for investors is that inherent differences in the various grid-scale energy storage systems announced to date have led to profound confusion over the basic question of where the most attractive short-term business opportunities lie.

There are no clear answers, but there are some important landmarks to help investors get their bearings.

I recently stumbled across an April 2011 report from Sandia National Laboratories titled "Energy Storage Systems Cost Update" that provides useful generic guidance for investors. The first important point in the report is that every grid-scale energy storage system has two critical subsystems that ultimately dictate system cost. The first is a Power Subsystem that includes the control electronics, communications equipment, AC-DC inverters and other hardware needed to connect a battery array to the grid. The second is an Energy Storage Subsystem that includes the battery array itself. While the costs in the following table are generic estimates that won't usually be spot-on accurate, they can be helpful to investors who want to assess and understand the revenue impact of a particular facility for the battery manufacturer.

In most press releases for grid-scale energy storage installations, ratings are given for both system power (expressed in kW or MW) and system energy (expressed in kWh or MWh). For example, in late October, A123 and AES commissioned a 32 MW ? 8 MWh storage facility at a wind farm in Laurel Mountain, West Virginia. Based on the Sandia table, total system costs would include $12.8 million for the Power Control Subsystem and $4.8 million for the Energy Storage Subsystem, or roughly $17.6 million overall. Earlier this week, A123 announced that it would supply a 1 MW ? 1 MWh system for use at a utility substation in Maui. Again, based on the Sandia table, total system costs would include $0.4 million for the Power Control Subsystem and $0.6 million for the Energy Storage System, or roughly $1 million overall.

In a recent webinar titled "Grid Storage: Connecting dots in a fragmented market," Lux Research observed that while the grid-scale storage market historically focused on long duration energy projects, the trend over the next few years will be heavily weighted in favor of power projects. The reason that the distinction is critically important for investors is that power projects offer far less benefit to the battery manufacturer than energy projects. In Laurel Mountain, for example, approximately 70% of the total cost was paid to equipment vendors for the Power Subsystem and A123's share was roughly 30%. In comparison, A123's share of the Maui contract will be about 60% while equipment vendors for the Power Subsystem will garner about 40% of the revenue. The bottom line is that it's important for investors to understand the specific function an installation will serve if they want to understand the revenue and cost of goods sold impact for the battery manufacturer.

In addition to providing a reasonable basis to estimate the revenue impact of a particular installation on a battery manufacturer, the Sandia report also estimated the discounted present value of the 10-year total cost of ownership for each of the generic energy storage systems identified in the first table. The following table rearranges the total cost of ownership data from Sandia to conform to the presentation format and order used above.

The important part of the total cost of ownership table isn't so much the dollar values the Sandia model calculated for the generic energy storage systems as the fact that several technologies can be cost competitive and the buying decision will be made based on the specific performance requirements of the buyer and the specific performance capabilities of the system that's being evaluated as a potential solution. I'm a firm believer in the law of economic gravity ? that the cheapest solution for any problem will usually win the lion's share of the business. That's particularly true in applications like grid-scale energy storage where the normal size increment is a 40-foot shipping container and weights are rounded to tons. Some buyers will be subject to significant space or weight constraints, but most will not. Therefore, the critical decision metrics will be reliability, performance that matches the customer's needs and total cost of ownership.

Over the last few years a quasi-religious mythology has arisen on Wall Street about the inherent superiority of lithium-ion batteries for every application you can imagine. It's a delusion that has its source in masterful PR rather than economic reality. While there's no question that lithium-ion is and will remain the go-to battery chemistry for applications like portable electronics and electric vehicles where size and weight are mission critical constraints, size and weight are not significant advantages when it comes to grid-scale facilities.

That leads to an inescapable conclusion that manufacturers of advanced lead-acid battery systems like Enersys (ENS), advanced lead-carbon battery systems like Axion Power International, zinc bromine battery systems like ZBB Energy, lithium-ion battery systems like A123 Systems and flywheel based systems like Active Power will all be competitive in the grid-scale energy storage space and each of their technologies will have a more than ample base of potential customers.

Grid-scale energy storage is a very big tent with plenty of room for several successful competitors that can bring a cost-effective product to market and earn a share of the business. While I'm a big fan of emerging lead-carbon battery technologies because I worked for a lead-carbon battery developer when its technology was little more than a laboratory experiment, I'm the first to remind readers that there is no silver bullet and the space will be incredibly competitive for decades. The racers are a couple steps out of the starting blocks and lithium-ion presently enjoys a half-step lead. With 397 meters left to run and 10 hurdles left to clear, it's far too early for anybody to be crowning a champion.

Disclosure: Author is a former director of Axion Power International (AXPW.OB) and holds a substantial long position in its common stock.

Russia Botches Another Rocket Launch

Next time do even some research before spreading worthless garbage. Did a Russian rape your mother or something?

Seriously, I can't find one sentence in what you wrote that isn't false, that's downright impressive.

this will remain the case for at least 20 years

The Space X Dragon Capsule had it's first test flight in 2010.

the time it'll take for a functional Shuttle replacement to be designed, built, tested and launched given the current available funding (or lack thereof)

The Shuttle was a giant worthless dangerous money sink that should never be resurrected.

rockets are updated regularly, but when was the last time the US actually invented one from scratch through to completion?

Falcon 9- First Launch in 2010
Antares- First Launch to be in 2012

extreme age of all existing launch facilities.

I wish someone invented some way of building new things, boy would that be a wonder. Also, SpaceX is building a launch facility at Vandenberg Air Force Base right now. Guess someone did invent a way.

If a Soyuz carrying US astronauts reaches orbit but cannot dock with the ISS, the astronauts will be stranded. There's no rescue service possible.

So the ISS is populated by magical fairies that give the Soyuz their magic to get back to Earth and it can't de-orbit without their help?

More likely, if a stage failed, the rocket would be remotely destroyed along with the crew. Or it would smear itself over the landscape with much the same effect.

Unlike the stupidly dangerous Shuttle, the Soyuz system is perfectly capable of ejecting the capsule to safety even before launch. In fact, in one instance the they did do just that moments before the rocket exploded on the tarmac. Everyone survived.

We're increasingly aware that space is unsafe, but nobody is willing to stump up the cash to make it safe enough.

The Soyuz hasn't killed anyone in forty years, despite probably being run in a borderline criminally negligible manner for the last twenty. The Shuttle was handled with kid gloves in comparison and we still lost two of them. A capsule is just inherently an order of magnitude easier to shove with safety and failsafe features. More than once the Soyuz has reentered the atmosphere upside down while still strapped to it's orbital module. No one died. Imagine if the Shuttle did that.

It would also require total trust and cooperation between the US and Russia - and that would be political suicide for anyone in either country to suggest, let alone try.

The Russians seem to be doing rather well so far and I don't doubt SpaceX won't have much trouble either.

AHF Rose Parade Float Honoring Elizabeth Taylor Will Be First to Focus on HIV/AIDS: VIDEO

Jordan

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation today announced that this year its entry in the 123rd Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena on January 2 has been approved by officials and will be the first-ever float to focus on HIV/AIDS.

Check out Leslie Jordan's announcement about the float, which is intended to remind the world that the fight against HIV/AIDS is not over, AFTER THE JUMP...

The float, entitled 'Our Champion', honors Elizabeth Taylor and her advocacy on behalf of people with HIV/AIDS.

AHF is allowing the public to participate by remembering and honoring a loved one lost to AIDS. By texting FLOWER to 20222 along with the name of the person you are remembering, a name will be printed on a water vial holding one of the more than 150,000 roses on the float for a $5 donation.

According to the organization, "The float will take the form of an oversized red ribbon, the international symbol of AIDS, with a circling world globe. There will be photographs of Taylor from various stages in her life and career: from ?National Velvet,? her breakthrough film as a child; from the film, ?Cleopatra;? and an iconic photo from her later years when she was devoting much of her life to advocacy on AIDS. The photos will be largely be rendered in black and white, using seeds and grains to capture the effects of a black and white photo. At least one of the photos will have spot color, also rendered in seeds, grains and flowers: for her world famous eyes, and to color a small red AIDS ribbon pinned to her blouse."

Check out Leslie Jordan's announcement about the float, which is intended to remind the world that the fight against HIV/AIDS is not over, AFTER THE JUMP...

?Vocal? app lets users control a Mac with an iPhone 4S (Appolicious)

Software that can take dictation from your voice isn?t exactly new, but with the popularity of Apple?s voice-controlled personal assistant software Siri in its iPhone 4S, the idea of using your voice to control your devices has become cool again.

And the voice-control technology in the iPhone 4S is actually pretty impressive. It?s that technology that?s leveraged by a new app called Vocal. It uses the iPhone 4S and your voice to enact commands or take dictation on your Mac ? in a way, bringing Siri-like capabilities to other computers. The app?s primary function is to let you speak to your iPhone and then sends the transcript of your dictation to your computer using a local Wi-Fi connection, but it has other uses as well.

As Macworld explains, Vocal uses a companion program you?ll need to download and run on your Mac to work. Once you?ve got that, firing up Vocal on your iPhone should allow the two devices to connect to one another, and you?re off.

Vocal uses the same dictation capabilities that your iPhone 4S has built in system-wide, but it operates a little differently than Siri, which is designed to cut out if you pause for too long while dictating an email or text message. Unlike Siri, you can?t activate Vocal with your voice, you have to hit a button to start and stop dictation or issuing commands. But once you hit the ?Done? button, your command or text is transferred automatically.

And the voice control elements of Vocal are pretty deep. The app can let you speak to control iTunes, dictate tweets on social networking site Twitter, or send emails, among other things like searching the Internet, starting a print job or using Mac apps like Dictionary. These are things Siri can do on your iPhone 4S, but if you want to use your Mac?s capabilities for those services, Vocal is the bridge you need.

Siri and the iPhone 4S aren?t without their issues, even if the voice recognition software is impressive. That?s why Siri is still a ?beta? release. Apple is working out the kinks with the software to make it better. So don?t expect Vocal to work flawlessly; voice recognition software has come a long way, after all, but it still has a long way to go. But Vocal does take one of the coolest features about Apple?s latest smartphone and give you the power to use it with your computer. That?s certainly cool, and it?ll only run you $2.

Verizon in the midst of yet another major data outage

Verizon outage

Well, that's no good. Verizon Wireless is dead in the water this morning for what appears to be, well, most everybody this morning. 3G data ... dead. 4G data ... dead. Pick a 3G/4G LTE phone. It's dead. Phone calls can still be made, which means we're not overly worried about public safety. But it's yet another outage for Verizon, which already is the subject of much signal scrutiny these days.

More on the Next Great Data Outage of 2011 as we get it.

Growth sectors lead Wall Street higher (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stocks rose on Friday with growth-related shares leading the way as investors focused on a brighter U.S. economic outlook.

A stronger euro and retreating euro zone bond yields also helped investor confidence. Benchmark Italian bond yields held below 7 percent, and Spanish yields also fell. Still, worries persisted over possible sovereign credit downgrades to the euro zone members.

"It is becoming increasingly apparent the (U.S.) economic recovery is becoming self-sustaining," said Jeffrey Saut, chief investment strategist at Raymond James Financial in St. Petersburg, Florida.

"I think we're going to see reallocation (into growth sectors) when it becomes apparent the U.S. is not dipping into another recession."

The materials sector (.GSPM) was among the top S&P performers, up 1.7 percent. The energy group (.GSPE) was up 1.2 percent as U.S. oil futures added 0.5 percent.

Copper prices added 2.1 percent. Gold rallied about 2 percent but was still on course for a weekly loss.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) put on 86.28 points, or 0.73 percent, at 11,955.09. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) was up 13.78 points, or 1.13 percent, at 1,229.53. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) jumped 41.46 points, or 1.63 percent, at 2,582.47.

Online game maker Zynga Inc (ZNGA.O) was expected to rise in its Nasdaq debut after pricing its initial public offering at $10 per share, the top end of its range. Shares are expected to begin trading around 11 a.m. EST <1600 GMT>.

U.S. consumer prices were flat in November as Americans paid less for cars and gasoline, while the 12-month inflation reading fell for the second straight month, which could give the Federal Reserve more room to help a still-weak economy.

Jim Paulsen, chief investment officer at Wells Capital Management in Minneapolis, said subdued inflation will be a long-term positive as consumers benefit from contained prices.

"That's one of the reasons you're seeing better consumer (confidence) of late," he said.

Research In Motion Ltd (RIM.TO)(RIMM.O) posted a sharp drop in profit on Thursday, offered a dismal outlook for BlackBerry shipments during the holidays and delayed an overhaul of its smartphones. The U.S.-traded stock dropped 11 percent to $13.47.

Shares of Adobe Systems Inc (ADBE.O) jumped 7.3 percent to $28.37 after results from the maker of Photoshop and Acrobat software beat Wall Street projections.

Data this week suggested a strengthening U.S. economic recovery, giving further support to equities.

Jobless claims fell to a 3-1/2-year low last week and factory activity in parts of the U.S. Northeast picked up in December, data showed Thursday.

Johnny Knox Injury: Bears WR Suffers Back Injury, Is Carted Off After Brutal Hit (VIDEO)

Early in the first quarter of the Bears' game with the Seahawks at Soldier Field, Chicago wide receiver Johnny Knox suffered a frightening back injury. Facing a 3rd-and-6 situation during the first series of the team's second drive of the game, Bears quarterback Caleb Hanie fired a pass up the middle to Knox on a slant route. The third-year player reeled it in for a 17-yard gain. However, as Knox attempted to pick up yards after the catch, Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor dislodged the ball. As Knox dove to recover the fumble, he collided with Seahawks defensive end Anthony Hargrove.

The contact with Hargrove bent Knox's back at angle that looked as if very serious injury was a possibility. Initially, the Chicago crowd booed the fumble but soon changed its tune, realizing that Knox may be gravely injured. After being attended to by medical staff on the field for approximately 10 minutes, Knox was placed on a stretcher and carted off the field. He reportedly had movement in his hands and arms as he left the field.

On the play when Knox suffered the injury, the loose ball was eventually scooped up by Seahawks safety Earl Bennet. On the ensuing Seattle possession, Marshawn Lynch would score a rushing touchdown to stake the visitors to an early 7-0 lead.

Jobless claims at 3.5 year low, factories mixed (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits dropped to a 3-1/2-year low last week, suggesting a weak U.S. economy is gradually improving even though factory data proved more mixed.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 19,000 to a seasonally adjusted 366,000, the Labor Department said on Thursday. That was the lowest level since May 2008, and confounded economist' expectations for a rise to 390,000.

In a separate reports, two regional Fed business surveys showed stronger than expected growth in December.

The New York Federal Reserve Bank said its "Empire State" general business conditions index rose to 9.53 - the highest since May - from 0.61 in December. The index was boosted by a strong rebound in new orders and an improvement in hiring.

The Philadelphia Fed said its index of business conditions rose to 10.3 in December from 3.6 the previous month on a surge in new orders.

However, a report from the Federal Reserve on U.S. industrial production offered some reason for pause. Output dropped 0.2 percent in November, the first drop since April and much weaker than forecasts for a 0.2 percent gain.

"The data is in line with a modestly improving overall economy here in the United Sates," said Peter Kenny, managing director at Knight Capital in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Economists cautioned that troubles in Europe remain a major risk to U.S. growth, with fresh signs emerging on Thursday that the crisis in dampening production in Asia.

Some domestic risks are also lurking as lawmakers continue to haggle over extending a payroll tax cut and emergency jobless claims for U.S. workers. Failure to reach a compromise could dent the expansion early next year.

The unexpected drop in claims last week pushed them closer to the 350,000 mark that analysts say would signal a more sustained improvement in the job market.

It offered further proof of increased momentum in the pace of economic activity, even though retail sales rose modestly in November. This is in sharp contrast to Europe, where the festering debt crisis has already pushed some economies into recession.

The Federal Reserve on Tuesday acknowledged the improvement in the jobs market, but said unemployment remained high. The jobless rate dropped to a 2-1/2 year low of 8.6 percent in November.

The U.S. central bank said the debt crisis gripping Europe was a big risk to the U.S. economy, which it described as "expanding moderately".

A second report from the Labor Department showed producer prices rose slightly more than expected in November, while the year-on-year rate for prices excluding food and energy increased by the most in nearly 2-1/2 years.

The Labor Department said its seasonally adjusted index for prices received by farms, factories and refineries increased 0.3 percent, unwinding October's 0.3 percent fall.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected wholesale prices to increase 0.2 percent.

Excluding volatile food and energy, producer prices edged up 0.1 percent last month after being flat in October. That was below economists' expectations for a 0.3 percent gain.

But in the 12 months to November, core producer prices rose 2.9 percent, the largest increase since June 2009, after increasing 2.8 percent the prior month.

The report showed broad gains in producer prices but labor market slack could make it difficult for companies to pass on the increased costs to consumers.

The improving labor market tone was also highlighted by a drop in the four-week moving average of claims to the lowest since mid-July 2008.

The number of people still receiving benefits under regular state programs after an initial week of aid edged up 4,000 to 3.6 million in the week ended December 3.

Economists had forecast so-called continuing claims rising to 3.63 million from a previously reported 3.58 million.

In a further hint of economic strength, the U.S. current account deficit narrowed to $110.3 billion during the third quarter, its lowest level in nearly two years, as exports hit another record high, a government report showed on Thursday.
