Movie Review: 'Chronicle' ? CBS Philly

Call?Chronicle an anti-superhero flick.

But?the level of entertainment?that this modestly budgeted?but cleverly resourceful science fiction thriller delivers ? cast with unknowns, offering a tidy 83-minute running time,?and?squarely in the ?found footage? format ??is almost heroic.

Three high-school-senior friends in suburban Seattle ? Andrew, a bullied outcast with a dying mother and abusive father played by?Dane DeHaan; his?wannabe-philosopher cousin Matt, played by Alex Russell; and his popular future-politician classmate Steve, played by Michael B. Jordan ??gain superhuman abilities as a result of a discovery they make.

It occurs in a strangely cavernous hole in the ground, below which is a crystal cave that they descend to the bottom of, where they find a strange crystal,?apparently an extraterrestrial energy force that somehow imbues them with superhuman abilities.

And because one of them, Andrew, is nothing if not a documentarian, he records just about everything, which is his way of both validating and exploiting his outsider status.? This of course includes their new gifts ? telekinesis and?flight.

Are these blessings or curses?

At first their newfound skills are fun to indulge and display, as their puckish pranks, spirited horseplay, and boys-gone-wild shenanigans?make evident.? But they keep their amazing secret from the rest of the world.? In other words, innocence still rules, but corruption waits around the corner.

And because they apparently do not subscribe to Spider-Man?s superheroic reminder, ?With great power comes great responsibility,? and even though they have agreed not to use their powers against humans, in anger, or in public ? and, of course,?because teen angst never sleeps ? before long they find themselves abusing their?uncanny powers in sinister and destructive ways, as mischief escalates into something much darker and more dangerous.

With Andrew?s newly acquired capabilities, the hostility and rage that he has bottled up for so long?has found a way out if that is indeed what he wants.??Let?s just hope he doesn?t snap.

Directed by debuting Josh Trank and scripted by Max Landis (the son of director John), based on a story by Trank and Landis, Chronicle chronicles the adventures of our trio of protagonists with a combination of Andrew?s camera?s point-of-view, a friend?s camera?s point-of-view, surveillance-camera footage, telephone-camera shots, and news feeds.? Certainly there is? an understandable emphasis on the special effects, but they?re handled with matter-of-factness and restraint ? and are nonetheless expert and spectacular ? and without skimping on character interaction or development.

Landis and Trank, leaving no stone unturned,?are quick to answer each?question or objection?that pops into our minds about just how all this footage is actually being acquired.? Instead of playing fast and loose with their structural gimmick ? ah, the influence of YouTube ??they follow through on its implications like seasoned pros.

What Chronicle shares with other offerings in the found footage sub-genre such as The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, and Cloverfield is the?borrowed verisimilitude to milk suspense and instill fear.? What is different about it, though,?is that this isn?t really a horror flick, but science fiction.? And that it manages to not only reach for authenticity but to achieve it in disbelief-suspending splendor.

So we?ll levitate 3 stars out of 4 for the pleasant out-of-nowhere surprise, Chronicle,?a stimulating combo plate of sci-fi, comedy, and action that,?like its protagonists, lifts right off the ground.

Law enforcement websites under attack by hackers

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? Saboteurs have hacked into the websites of several law enforcement agencies worldwide in attacks attributed to the collective called Anonymous, including in Boston and in Salt Lake City, where police say personal information of confidential informants and tipsters was accessed.

The Utah hackers gained access this week to sensitive data, including citizen complaints about drug crimes, including phone numbers, addresses and other personal information, police said.

"We're still knee deep in trying to get a feel for the extent of the problem," Salt Lake City police Detective Dennis McGowan said.

The group claimed responsibility for an attack on the website of a Virginia law firm for a U.S. Marine convicted in a deadly 2005 attack in Haditha, Iraq.

The attacks come after Anonymous published a recording of a phone call between the FBI and Scotland Yard early Wednesday, gloating in a Twitter message that "the FBI might be curious how we're able to continuously read their internal comms for some time now."

In Greece, the Justice Ministry took down its site Friday after a video by activists claiming to be Greek and Cypriot members of Anonymous was displayed for at least two hours.

In Boston, a message posted on the police website Friday said, "Anonymous hacks Boston Police website in retaliation for police brutality at OWS," apparently a reference to the Occupy Wall Street movement. A police spokesman would not confirm Anonymous was responsible.

In a message posted on the Boston police department's website, the group said that the site had been attacked several months ago and that hundreds of passwords were released in retaliation for what they called brutality against Occupy Boston.

In October, Boston police acknowledged that various websites used by members of the police department ? including the website belonging to the police patrolmen's association ? had been hacked and possibly compromised. The department said it had asked all department personnel to change their passwords on the police department's network.

Boston's Occupy movement set up camp in the city's financial district for two months this fall. The first hack came about 10 days after Boston police arrested 141 Occupy Boston demonstrators on Oct. 11.

Police dismantled the camp Dec. 10, citing public health and safety concerns.

"They clearly ignored our warnings," the message on the department's website said Friday.

"So you get your kicks beating protesters? "That's OK; we get kicks defacing ... your websites ? again."

"It is unfortunate that someone would go to this extent to compromise BPDNews.com, a helpful and informative public safety resource utilized daily by community members seeking up-to-date news and information about important safety matters," police said in a statement.

The Salt Lake City website remained down Friday as the investigation continued, and police said criminal charges are being considered.

Police in blamed the attack on Anonymous' opposition to an anti-graffiti paraphernalia bill that eventually failed in the state Senate. The bill would have made it illegal to possess any instrument, tool or device with the intent of vandalizing an area with graffiti.

The group says it attacked the website of the Alexandria, Va., law firm of Puckett & Faraj, which represented a U.S. Marine convicted in a 2005 attack in Iraq that resulted in the deaths of 24 unarmed civilians. Attorney Neal Puckett did not immediately return a telephone message and email request for comment Friday.

Anonymous is a collection of Internet enthusiasts, pranksters and activists whose targets have included financial Visa and MasterCard, the Church of Scientology and law enforcement agencies.

Following a spate of arrests across the world, the group and its various offshoots have focused their attention on law enforcement agencies in general and the FBI in particular.

While it?s well known that Asian Americans have it tough in the US music industry,?Vinni v?makes a bold move by casting two talented Asian American actors as the lead male roles. As one of the?top ten american asian female pop singers?today, Viennie V takes on a social responsibility and makes sure to represent her Asian American background. By doing so, the rising pop artist encourages the use of Asian American singers and actors in the US entertainment industry. As mentioned earlier, Asian Americans have a hard time making it in US entertainment and when they are able to land roles, they are often stereotyped and play only minor parts. However, Viennie V is determined to change this and boldly casts two Asian actors as two out of her three love interests in the music video. Even more, the ?For You? singer also ends up falling in love with one of the Asian American actors, something that rarely happens in American entertainment. We give total kudos to Viennie V for staying true to her roots and making sure to represent her community in the best way possible. As one of the few?Asian american female singers?in the US today, she is setting an example for future artists to follow. We can?t wait to see more inspirational work from this daring new pop singer.?
