Madoff's brother held on fraud charges

By msnbc.com staff, WNBC, and news wires

Peter Madoff, the younger brother of convicted swindler Bernie Madoff, was taken into custody Friday and is expected to plead guilty to charges related to his brother's massive,?multi-billion dollar?Ponzi scheme.

The arrest, which took place at his lawyer's office in?midtown Manhattan, had been expected. WNBC?said Peter Madoff, 66, was led into a car by two FBI agents. Later Friday, Madoff?is scheduled to appear in the same courthouse where his brother, 74, was convicted and sentenced in March 2009 to 150 years in prison for a crime that stunned the world in the throes of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.

Federal prosecutors on Wednesday revealed in a letter that Peter Madoff had been criminally charged with participating in his brother's fraud. He and his brother are the only?Madoff family members to have been arrested and charged in the Ponzi scheme.

The letter, filed in federal court in Manhattan, said Peter Madoff was expected to plead guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and falsifying records as well as other charges. He agreed not to seek a sentence other than 10 years in prison, the letter said.

Peter Madoff also agreed to forfeit about $143.1 billion, including all real and personal property, the letter said. The amount is symbolic, being more than twice the estimated size of the fraud.

John Wing, a lawyer for Peter Madoff, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Peter Madoff was chief compliance officer at Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC when his brother was arrested on December 11, 2008.

Prosecutors have not said whether criminal cases are also being prepared against Bernard Madoff's son, Andrew, who was co-director of trading, or his niece, Shana, who was a compliance officer at the firm.

In May, Irving Picard, the trustee seeking money for victims of the Ponzi scheme, named members of Madoff's family in an expanded $255.3 million lawsuit, claiming they should have detected Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme at the firm that operated "as if it were their family piggy bank."

Besides Madoff's brother Peter, Picard sued Andrew Madoff, who was co-director of trading; the estate of son Mark, co-director of trading who committed suicide in December 2010; and Shana Madoff.

In the lawsuit, Picard described Peter Madoff as a savvy investor who once served as vice-chairman of the board of governors of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.

Picard is seeking $90.4 million from Peter, $81.3 million from Mark Madoff's estate, $73.8 million from Andrew and $15.3 million from Shana.

Lawyers for Andrew and Shana Madoff did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

Between 1993 and 2008, Peter Madoff was paid over $36 million in salary and bonuses, Picard said, and the firm funded his lavish lifestyle, including $140,000 for a Ferrari in 1995 and a home on Manhattan's upscale Park Avenue.

Peter Madoff is charged with one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and mail fraud as well as making false statements about the firm's compliance program and investment advisory business.

He is also charged with falsifying records.

About a dozen people have now been implicated in criminal wrongdoing related to the Madoff firm.

Five have pleaded not guilty: Annette Bongiorno, Daniel Bonventre, Joann Crupi, Jerome O'Hara and George Perez.

Frank DiPascali, the former chief financial officer often called Bernard Madoff's right-hand man, pleaded guilty in August 2009 and has been praised by prosecutors for his cooperation. He has yet to be sentenced.

Picard has estimated customers of the Madoff firm lost about $20 billion. On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court let stand a lower court ruling on the trustee's methods for calculating losses. That decision could help Picard repay customers faster.?

Communicators hear how blogging is another way for church to evangelize

Published:

INDIANAPOLIS (CNS) -- Blogging offers the Catholic Church one more way to evangelize for the faith while reaching new audiences, especially young people, a panel of Catholic bloggers told a packed room during the Catholic Media Conference in Indianapolis. The panelists, which included Bishop Christopher J. Coyne, apostolic administrator of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, a frequent user of Twitter, agreed that while not all bloggers are official church representatives, the relatively new but quickly growing form of communication has influenced how the church spreads its message. They also said during the June 22 session that blogging, like any communication tool, must be used responsibly. Elizabeth Scalia, managing editor of the Catholic portal at Patheos.com and writer of a blog named The Anchoress, said that traditional print publications, such as diocesan newspapers, with a strong Internet presence can act quickly to clarify misperceptions about the church in the mainstream media. She suggested that the newspaper blogs could track a story and make corrections in real time, providing an overview of an event until publication day. While the longevity of blogs may be short-lived, Scalia said that their impact can be long term. "Put your stuff on the Internet and for better or worse, it's there forever," she said. "In a way that gives the Holy Spirit some room to work. A thing you wrote three years ago and forgot about may come up in the Google search of someone who really needs to see it, and suddenly evangelization, tailor-made for that person, happens."

Not all heartburn types require Nexium to be taken | Health and Safety

Heartburn is certainly not the worst health problem you can experience, but it?s a disturbing one for sure. Patients experiencing this problem are seriously distracted by it, especially if the symptoms are severe. Fortunately, there are medications such as Nexium that can soothe the discomfort and provide the necessary relief when required. However, it?s very important to know what the most likely causes of heartburn are and what can be done about it in different situation. That?s why we?ll overview the basic types of heartburn:

Seasonal heartburn

This is usually regarded as the mildest form of heartburn that is common during the summer. With more fruits on the table, common barbecues and more relaxed schedule, heartburn can result from simple overeating and consumption of foods that provoke acid production in the stomach. These include heavy fats, meat, fast food, sweets, chocolate, coffee and others. If you start feeling a mild discomfort in your esophagus, it?s better to reconsider your diet and include milder products into it, such as apples, fish, poultry and others.

Nighttime heartburn

Nighttime heartburn is usually a lifestyle problem, resulting from improper meal schedule. The main cause for heartburn during sleep, which can be the main factor for developing sleep disorders and associated conditions, is the fact that when lying down your stomach is in line with your esophagus and its contents tend to flow out of it, and cause acidic damage to the sensitive inner lining of the esophagus. In order to prevent this, make sure to eat in at least three hours before bedtime and avoid heavy meals in the evening.

Pregnancy heartburn

Heartburn is a rather common symptom during pregnancy that results from the physiological changes the pregnant woman is undergoing. Normally, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which connects the stomach with the esophagus and prevents the food from flowing back up, lies within the same plain as the diaphragm and its functions are amplified with the help of this muscle. However, when the fetus starts to develop, it pushes the stomach and the esophagus upwards a bit, to the point when LES is not within the same plane as the diaphragm. This in turn weakens the functions of the sphincter and allows some stomach contents to reflux back into the esophagus, causing heartburn. If this becomes a major discomfort, consult with your doctor about using Nexium.

GERD

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease is a serious health problem that can lead to chronic heartburn and more serious symptoms. If you experience heartburn on a regular basis at least once a week, it may be the sign of GERD. And the sooner you start treating it the better. Doctors usually prescribe Nexium as a means to soothe the discomfort, although it is usually a part of the treatment that involves other medications as well.

AAA New Mexico: Gas prices drop as July 4 holiday looms

As many New Mexicans prepare to travel during the July 4 holiday, motorists are paying less at the pump than last week.

As many New Mexicans prepare to travel during the July 4 holiday, motorists are paying less at the pump than last week. The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in the state is $3.41, a drop of nine cents, according to the AAA?

Among major metro areas, drivers in Santa Fe are paying the most, at $3.41, while drivers in Las Cruces are paying the least at $3.27. Nationally, the average is $3.37.

Analysts say concern about the global economy, particularly the debt crisis in Europe, and a slowdown in growth in large economies such as Brazil, India and China, continues to be a drag on expectations for future oil demand, putting downward pressure on prices.

Consumers are reaping the benefits. AAA New Mexico forecasts that the lower gas prices will act as a motivation for about 3.1 million Mountain Region residents to travel next week.

Of those travelers, 2.4 million will be driving to their destination with an average distance of 826 miles round-trip. The Mountain Region includes New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming.

?Many families are taking advantage of lower gas prices this summer vacation season and are traveling to a variety of destinations both in and out of the state,? AAA Texas/New Mexico Representative Sarah Schimmer said. ?Families in New Mexico are expected to spend an average of $648 over the 4th of July holiday.?

AAA offers an online fuel cost calculator here. By entering your starting point, destination, as well as the make, model and year of your vehicle, you can get an estimated gas budget.

Egypt's Islamist president-elect seeks wide support

CAIRO (Reuters) - Islamist President-elect Mohamed Mursi began talks on Wednesday with groups nervous about where he will take Egypt after the generals who have ruled since Hosni Mubarak's fall make way for the republic's first civilian leader.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged Mursi to bring diverse groups into his government, mentioning Egypt's Coptic Christian minority, secular-minded Egyptians and young people.

The U.S. State Department played down reports that Clinton might visit Cairo this weekend, saying that she was unlikely to visit Egypt during her current trip to Europe, which is due to end on Saturday in Geneva.

Speaking at a news conference in Helsinki, Clinton stressed the importance of developing democratic institutions, including countervailing forces such as an independent judiciary and a free press.

"We hope that full democracy is understood to be more than an election," she said. "One election does not a democracy make.

"That's just the beginning of the hard work and the hard work requires pluralism, respecting the rights of minorities, independent judiciary (and) independent media..." Clinton said.

Clinton promised support for a democratic transition in Egypt, a firm U.S. ally and a recipient of billions of dollars in U.S. aid since it signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1979.

"We've heard some very positive statements thus far including about respecting international obligations, which would in our view cover the peace treaty with Israel, but we have to wait and judge by what is actually done," she said.

Mursi, 60, a U.S.-trained engineer and Muslim Brotherhood insider, is expect to take his oath on Saturday, but it is uncertain where he will do so.

Parliament is the normal venue, but the constitutional court dissolved the Islamist-led lower house this month in a clear attempt to roll back the Brotherhood's electoral successes since Mubarak's overthrow in a burst of popular anger 16 months ago.

According to a government source quoted by state-run al-Ahram newspaper, the same court will swear in Mursi, but this may be unpalatable to the man who defeated a former pro-Mubarak air force chief in a run-off for the presidency this month.

The office of Egypt's president-elect Mursi said details on the swearing in ceremony would be released on Thursday.

UNEASY BEDFELLOWS

Mursi's own authority has already been circumscribed by the military, which has long viewed the Brotherhood as a peril to Egypt's secular establishment and must now cohabit with a man it fears will seek to erode its entrenched power and privilege.

The military has also asserted its right to veto the proposals of an assembly supposed to draft a new constitution, in another sign that the generals are bent on retaining a controlling grip on Egypt's future.

The army council has promised a handover of power by July 1, but no details of the ceremony have been released. The state news agency said the presidency would announce them on Thursday.

Al-Ahram said Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi would hand executive authority to Mursi in an army club on Saturday in front of the military council, the acting prime minister and his colleagues, political party leaders and foreign diplomats.

Mursi, who has promised an inclusive government, sat down with some minority Christian leaders in the first of several meetings that will involve political parties and youth groups active in the anti-Mubarak revolt, said Yasser Ali, spokesman to the president-elect.

Mursi also met 24 young campaigners who played a leading role in the uprising that toppled Mubarak, and planned to meet the heads of political parties on Thursday, Ali said.

The groups represent diverse constituencies that share fears of what the Brotherhood's Islamist agenda might mean for Egypt, a deeply religious society where political freedom was stifled for decades in Mubarak's military-backed police state.

The Brotherhood, itself banned under Mubarak, says it wants to work with other parties. It denies planning to curb social freedoms or infringe on the rights of Egypt's 10 percent Coptic Christian minority, which has long complained of discrimination.

Mursi's daunting task is to accommodate the military, reach out to his political opponents and stabilize a country shaken by months of upheaval, uncertainty and economic stress.

He must also cope with Salafi Islamists, the Brotherhood's ultra-orthodox rivals. They may have helped him to victory against his military adversary in the run-off but may now press for action on a stricter Islamist agenda.

"We are supposed to meet with the president in the next few days to assess the role of political parties in the next phase," said Emad Abdel Ghaffour, head of the Salafi Nour Party, which won nearly a quarter of the seats in the dissolved parliament.

"It will be a coalition of forces working together. Nour Party is part of this commitment," he told Reuters.

Sayed Zabiuddin Ansari, who is also known as Abu Jundal, was arrested after officials in Saudi Arabia deported him at the request of the Indian government. Mr. Ansari is believed to be the only Indian who took part in the attack, orchestrated by Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Indian officials say that since his arrest on June 21, Mr. Ansari has played a critical part in potentially revealing the role of the Pakistani government and intelligence service in the attack. In custody, the LeT member has reportedly already told Indian authorities that officials from the Pakistan?s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and military participated in planning the three-day attack on Mumbai.

India has long accused Pakistan of involvement in the attack, something that officials in Islamabad have denied. If Indian authorities verify Ansari?s claims, it is likely to strain relations even further between the two neighbors and isolate Pakistan on the international stage.

?His confession would make it harder to deny the state links to the attack,? said a retired, senior Indian intelligence officer in an article by the Hindustan Times.

The Hindustan Times adds that cooperation between Saudi and Indian intelligence officials has increased markedly over the past two years as the Gulf state sees India?s rich potential as a growing oil market. Traditionally, Saudi Arabia has been a strong ally of Pakistan.

B. Raman, a retired Indian intelligence official, writes in Outlook India that despite India?s initial excitement over Ansari?s arrest, authorities still must confirm his identity. In addition to his Abu Jundal alias, he is believed to also have gone by the name, Abu Hamza. Mr. Raman explains that Abu Hamza has long been a popular nickname for LeT members dating back to the 1990s, making it difficult to confirm identities.

He is presently in police custody. But?India?s anti-terrorism squad, however, says it is confident it can identify whether Ansari is the Abu Hamza and Abu Jundal wanted for the Mumbai attacks once he is in their custody.?

?We hope they have the right man. It can be confirmed only when we get access to him,? an anti-terrorism squad official told India Today.

As the only Indian national, Ansari is said to have relocated to Pakistan and?played a critical role in training the attackers how to operate in Mumbai. According to Indian detectives, Ansari coached the gunmen of the Mumbai attacks on how to make the terrorist plot appear to be homegrown by saying they were Indian Muslims from the Tolichowki area of Hyderbad, reports The Guardian. The gunmen were also instructed to say the attack was revenge for the treatment of Muslims in Kashmir.

?He knows a lot. He claims that they prepared for years for the 26/11 attack and every person was assigned a separate task. Being a Maharashtrian, he was given the task to familiarize the killers with local dialect as well as Mumbai's topography. He instructed the gang on how to ask for directions and what to say if checked and quizzed,? said an Indian official familiar with the details of the interrogation according to the Times of India.

Building relationships at LinkedIn

I was participating in a discussion at the Women in Photography group at LinkedIn recently as many of us are connecting to each other.? We had a discussion about the importance of letting people know where they came from, rather than just send the standard invitation that LinkedIn provides. Here is my commentary on that subject:

Checking the box does show up on the invite when received via email but isn?t that obvious ? the message that is sent says: I?d like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn, which is rather impersonal and if people don?t notice the bit above that says about the group, then they wouldn?t know why you?re sending an invitation.

I often write and speak about the importance of building relationships when networking so I encourage people to change that standard message that LinkedIn sends to something else that explains the reason for connecting. Even if it?s something like: ?hi, I?m a member of the women in photography group and would love to connect with you? or you could even say how much you?ve enjoyed someone?s commentary.? It does make it more personal and encourages people to accept invitations.

You might be interested to know I often get invites from people I don?t know personally. I accept immediately if they explain their interest.? If they don?t I will reply and ask them where they found me or what their interest is. If they reply I then accept. If they don?t reply I assume they don?t read their emails and why would I want to connect with someone who doesn?t want to continue working at building a relationship? They?ve ignored me which doesn?t give me confidence in what their interest maybe. Some people just want to grow numbers but not get to know others.

This is a topic I teach about often so it?s something I?m passionate about and hope it helps many of you too :-)

So, as a Virtual Assistant, it is also important for you to explain why you wish to connect with people too, and encourage them to explain their interest to you.? Open the doors to communication and you have no idea what it might lead to. Those VAs who are most successful at social media and building business do so by connecting with others and building relationships and getting to know their needs. You can?t do that if you don?t converse.? Why not try it today?

Africa militant groups sharing funds, explosives

Three of Africa's largest extremist groups are sharing funds and swapping explosives in what could signal a dangerous escalation of security threats on the continent, according to the commander of the U.S. military's Africa Command.

General Carter Ham said there are indications that Boko Haram, al-Shabab and al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb -- groups that he labeled as the continent's most violent -- are sharing money and explosive materials while training fighters together.

"Each of those three organizations is by itself a dangerous and worrisome threat," Ham said Monday at an African Center for Strategic Studies seminar for senior military and civilian officials from Africa, the United States and Europe.

Report: US expands secret 'shadow war' in Africa

"What really concerns me is the indications that the three organizations are seeking to coordinate and synchronize their efforts," Ham said. "That is a real problem for us and for African security in general."

The United States gave the "foreign terrorist" classification to three of the alleged leaders of the Islamist sect Boko Haram, based in remote northeast Nigeria, on June 20. But it declined to blacklist the entire organization to avoid elevating the group's profile internationally.

Police in Nigeria said members of the group seized a prison there Sunday and freed 40 inmates.

Blasts hit northern Nigeria churches

Islamist militant group al-Shabab is active in war-ravaged Somalia and has been blamed for attacks in Kenya. Last year it claimed responsibility for the death of Somali Interior Minister Abdi Shakur Sheikh Hassan.

Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), an affiliate of al-Qaida based in North Africa, is mainly a criminal organization operating in the Sahel region. It kidnaps Westerners for ransom and aids Africa's drug trade, according to intelligence officials.

'West African Afghanistan'?
U.S. and regional officials fear that a power vacuum in northern Mali following a military coup in March may open an expanded area of operations for Islamist militants. Some western diplomats talk of the country becoming a "West African Afghanistan."

Ham said AQIM was now operating "essentially unconstrained" throughout a large portion of northern Mali, where Islamists have imposed a harsh version of Shariah law.

The group was a threat not only to the countries in the region, but also has "a desire and an intent to attack Americans as well. So that becomes a real problem," Ham said.

Emphasizing that the U.S. military plays mainly a supporting role in Africa, Ham said the United States is providing intelligence and logistical help in the hunt for Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony, whose Lord's Resistance Army is accused of abducting children to use as fighters and hacking off limbs of civilians.

'Big fish' nabbed: Troops capture senior Kony commander

The International Criminal Court in The Hague indicted Kony for crimes against humanity in 2005, and his case hit the headlines in March when a video entitled "Kony 2012" put out by a U.S. activist group and calling for his arrest went viral across the Internet.

Ham said he was confident that Kony would ultimately be apprehended by African troops.

"This is an African-led effort," Ham said. "It is the African Union increasingly taking a leadership role with a little bit of support from the United States military. We think that is the right approach."

Video: Flying robot swarm wows at Cannes

15 min.

The performance of a flying robot swarm at a creativity festival in France has echoes of the highly-coordinated human theatrics that kicked off the summer Olympics four years ago in Beijing.?

The difference here, of course, is that real-life robots, not humans, are the performers.

The robots are quadrotors ? helicopters with four rotors. Their coordinated performance, which gets increasingly complex and mesmerizing as the show goes on, was choreographed by KMel Robotics and Marshmallow Laser Feast.

The most recent performance was the opening ceremony for the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors? Showcase at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.KMel Robotics was founded in late 2011 by Alex Kushleyev and Daniel Mellinger, recent graduates of the University of Pennsylvania?s GRASP Lab.?

The duo is also responsible for this video showing nine quadrotors playing the James Bond theme.?

While KMel Robotics promises more information on this project soon, we can surmise a bit more on how they pulled off the performance with a look back at the James Bond playing stunt. Innovation Daily reported:?

The secrets to their smooth, graceful movement are their small size, four rotors and smart on-board processor. By moving each rotor at different speeds, the bots can tilt and turn. Their processors decide the swiftest, smoothest path from Point A to Point B, then send out commands to the rotors 600 times a second.

In a swarm, the robots can also monitor where they are compared to their neighbors. It's important that each robot does this by itself, as it would be too difficult to have one central computer controlling each robot as it flies.

When not showing off their artsy side, the machines could find work scoping out dangerous settings such as buildings after an earthquake or a radiation leak.?

We?ve also seen a quadrotor that keep people motivated on their daily runs. Maybe there?s an idea in there for the opening ceremony for the summer Olympics this July in London??

(AP) ? Among the injustices about the death of Nora Ephron is that she isn't around to tell us about it.

"She was so, so alive," says her friend Carrie Fisher. "It makes no sense to me that she isn't alive anymore."

Ephron, the essayist, author and filmmaker who challenged and thrived in the male-dominated worlds of movies and journalism and was loved, respected and feared for her devastating and diverting wit, died Tuesday in Manhattan. Her publisher, Alfred A. Knopf, announced that she died of leukemia at age 71.

Born into a family of screenwriters, a top journalist in her 20s and 30s, then a best-selling author and successful director, Ephron was among the most quotable and influential writers of her generation. She wrote and directed such favorites as "Julie & Julia" and "Sleepless in Seattle," and her books included the novel "Heartburn," a knockout roman a clef about her marriage to Washington Post reporter Carl Bernstein; and the popular essay collections "I Feel Bad About My Neck" and "I Remember Nothing."

She was tough on others ? Bernstein's marital transgressions were immortalized by the horndog spouse in "Heartburn," a man "capable of having sex with a Venetian blind" ? and relentless about herself. She wrote openly about her difficult childhood, her failed relationships, her doubts about her physical appearance and the hated intrusion of age.

"We all look good for our age. Except for our necks," she wrote in the title piece from "I Feel Bad About My Neck," published in 2006. "Oh, the necks. There are chicken necks. There are turkey gobbler necks. There are elephant necks. There are necks with wattles and necks with creases that are on the verge of becoming wattles. ... According to my dermatologist, the neck starts to go at 43 and that's that."

Even within the smart-talking axis of New York-Washington-Los Angeles, no one bettered Ephron, slender and dark-haired, her bright and pointed smile like a one-liner made flesh. Friends from Mike Nichols and Meryl Streep to Calvin Trillin and Pete Hamill adored her for her wisdom, her loyalty and turns of phrase.

As a screenwriter, Ephron was nominated three times for Academy Awards, for "Silkwood," ''When Harry Met Sally ..." and "Sleepless in Seattle," and was the rare woman to write, direct and produce Hollywood movies. Fisher and Meg Ryan were among the many actresses who said they loved working with Ephron because she understood them so much better than did her male peers.

"I suppose you could say Nora was my ideal," Fisher said. "In a world where we're told that you can't have it all, Nora consistently proved that adage wrong. A writer, director, wife, mother, chef, wit ? there didn't seem to be anything she couldn't do. And not just do it, but excel at it, revolutionize it, set the bar for every other screenwriter, novelist, director."

"Nora Ephron was a journalist-artist who knew what was important to know; how things really worked, what was worthwhile, who was fascinating and why," said "Sleepless in Seattle" star Tom Hanks. "At a dinner table and on a film set she lifted us all with wisdom and wit mixed with love for us and love for life."

The eldest of four children, Ephron was born in New York to screenwriters Harry and Phoebe Ephron, who moved to Beverly Hills, Calif., when she was 4 years old. Words, words, words were the air she breathed. Regular visitors included "Casablanca" co-writer Julius J. Epstein, "Sunset Boulevard" collaborator Charles Brackett, and the team of Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich, who worked on "The Thin Man" and "It's a Wonderful Life."

Everyone was in movies, "the business."

"People who were not in the business were known as civilians," Ephron wrote in "I Remember Nothing."

If the best humor is born out of sadness, then Ephron was destined for comedy. She was 15, she recalled, when her mother became an alcoholic, finishing off a bottle of scotch a night. Her father, too, was a heavy drinker, "sloppy, sentimental," although "somehow his alcoholism was more benign."

Determined by high school to be a journalist, Ephron graduated from the single-sex Wellesley College in 1962, moved to New York and started out as a "mail girl" and fact checker at Newsweek. A newspaper strike at the end of the year gave her a chance. Victor Navasky, the future editor of The Nation, was then running a satirical magazine called the Monacle. He was working on a parody of the New York Post, "The New York Pest," and asked Ephron for a spoof of Post columnist Leonard Lyons.

She succeeded so well that the newspaper's publisher, Dorothy Schiff, reasoned that anyone who could make fun of the Post could also write for it. Ephron was asked to try out as a reporter. Within a week, she had a permanent job and remained there five years. The Post, she later wrote, was a "terrible paper," and she envied her peers at The New York Times and elsewhere who had more time to work on stories and had better access to people they wanted to interview.

"But the point is this. I was better off ..." she wrote in the introduction to the essay collection "Wallflower at the Orgy, published in 1970. "I learned to go through the clips, find the names of people from the subject's past, hunt them up in old telephone books, track them down, and pull out anecdotes they knew. What I'm saying may seem obvious; but one of the things that stuns me is how seldom reporters do this."

Ephron began writing for Esquire and The New York Times and developed a national following as a throwback to the prime of Dorothy Parker and S.J. Perelman and a worthy peer of such new and hip journalists as Gay Talese and Tom Wolfe. She covered political conventions, the feminist movement and Wellesley, which she labeled a factory for "docile" women. Part of her gift was her fresh takes on such traditional subjects for women as food and fashion, like in the essay "The Food Establishment: Life in the Land of the Rising Souffle (Or Is It the Rising Meringue?)"

"The typical member of the Food Establishment," she wrote, "is given to telling you, apropos of nothing, how many souffles he has been known to make in a short period of time. ... He gossips a good deal about his colleagues, about what they are cooking, writing, and eating; and whom they are talking to, about everything, in fact, except the one thing everyone else in the universe gossips about ? who is sleeping with whom."

By the 1970s, she had met Bernstein, who teamed with fellow Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward on prize-winning coverage of the Watergate scandal that brought down President Nixon. They married in 1976, and had two children, but love soon turned to hate ? and matured into art. Ephron was pregnant with their second child when she learned Bernstein was having an affair, a betrayal that had its rewards, once she stopped crying.

She wrote "Heartburn," later a film starring Streep and Jack Nicholson and directed by Nichols, with whom she collaborated often. The book was so close to her life that Bernstein threatened to sue. Decades later, the memory of the book's birth was easily summoned.

"Yes, totally, completely, absolutely, sitting at the legendary and long-gone Smith Corona electric typewriter that I once had," she told The Associated Press in 2010. "I was working on a screenplay and wrote the first 10 pages of a novel, and I knew the title, knew there were going to be recipes in it. This I remember, exactly where I was, working and knowing, 'Oh, I see, enough time has passed that I'm ready to do this.'"

Another perk from her time with Bernstein: She sussed out that "Deep Throat," the unnamed and unknown Watergate source, was in fact FBI official Mark Felt. She would allege that she told countless people about Felt, who did not acknowledge his role until years later.

Her screenwriting credits included "Heartburn," the nuclear power drama "Silkwood" and the romantic comedy "When Harry Met Sally ..." She twice directed the team of Ryan and Hanks, in "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail," and also worked with John Travolta (in the fantasy "Michael"), Steve Martin ("Mixed Nuts") and Nicole Kidman ("Bewitched").

Ephron had a great nose for nonsense, but was enough a citizen of Hollywood to fall, and fall hard, for a happy ending. "Sleepless in Seattle," in which Ryan and Hanks play long-distance admirers who meet at film's end, was not only a remake of the weeper "An Affair to Remember," but a tribute to how movies might tell us how to live. Ryan and her best pal, played by Rosie O'Donnell, are seen watching "Affair to Remember," which inspires Ryan to suggest to Hanks that they meet ? like Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr ? on top of the Empire State Building, on Valentine's Day.

"That's a chicks' movie," Hanks' character says when he learns about the film's plot.

Ephron was married three times: to Dan Greenburg, Bernstein and, quite happily, to "Wiseguys" author Nicholas Pileggi, whose book was adapted into the Martin Scorsese film "Goodfellas." Sisters Delia, Amy and Hallie Ephron also are writers and Nora and Delia collaborated on such films as "This Is My Life" and "Sleepless in Seattle."

In her essay "The O Word," Nora Ephron anticipated growing too old to make jokes about her age. She would be "really old," beyond sex in a hotel room, or even a frozen custard at Shake Shack. It would be nice if she believed in a higher being, but the phrase "everything happens for a reason" is a sermon that only annoys her.

Ephron wrote of summers in the Hamptons on Long Island when her children were little, of fireworks on the Fourth of July and picnics on the beach. She loved the sound of geese in mid-July ? "one of the things that made the summers out there so magical." As she aged, the geese reminded her that summer will end, and so will everything else.

"I especially began to hate their sound, which was not beating wings ? how could I have ever thought it was? ? but a lot of uneuphonious honks," she writes. "Now we don't go to Long Island in the summer and I don't hear the geese. Sometimes, instead, we go to Los Angeles, where there are hummingbirds, and I love to watch them because they're so busy getting the most out of life."

Obama heads South to raise campaign cash

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is hauling in millions of dollars for his re-election bid as he warns that Democrats will face a fundraising onslaught from Republicans during the fall campaign.

Obama was to collect more than $2.3 million at fundraisers in Atlanta and Miami on Tuesday following top-dollar events Monday night in Boston.

Republican challenger Mitt Romney raised more than $76 million last month for his presidential campaign and the GOP, and Obama's advisers expect Republican-leaning super PACs to pull in $1.2 billion before the election, posing a big-money challenge for the president. Obama has more than $100 million in his campaign account, but Democratic super PACs have struggled to raise money, making it possible that an incumbent president will be outspent.

"They will spend more money than we have ever seen in American history, and their message is very simple," Obama said in Boston. "They will just tell you that the economy is not where it needs to be, the economy is bad, and it's all my fault."

Obama has tried to portray Romney's business record in a negative light, pointing to a report that the private equity firm once run by Romney invested in companies that outsourced jobs to China and India. To drive home that theme, Obama's campaign started airing state-specific ads Tuesday in Virginia, Iowa and Ohio with a tag line that asks if voters "really want an outsourcer-in-chief in the White House."

Romney's campaign has said the report did not differentiate between "domestic outsourcing" and "offshoring" and don't take into account work done overseas to support U.S. exports.

Obama was holding the fundraisers at the start of a pivotal week for his campaign. The Supreme Court is expected to rule on Obama's health care overhaul law this week, passing judgment on the most significant piece of legislation during his presidency.

During the Boston events, the president made no mention of the Supreme Court's ruling Monday on Arizona's immigration law. The court struck down parts of the immigration law, but allowed a section of the law requiring police to check the immigration status of someone they stop for another reason and whom they suspect is in the country illegally.

Obama said in a statement that "no American should ever live under a cloud of suspicion just because of what they look like" and said police in Arizona should not enforce the provision in a way that undermines civil rights.

The president was speaking Tuesday at two fundraisers in Atlanta, followed by two events in Miami Beach, including a performance by singer Marc Anthony.

Fan resembling Chesney booted from concert

Which one is the real deal? Teacher Mark Blankenship, right, was thrown out of a Kenny Chesney concert for reportedly looking too much like the singer, shown at left.

By Randee Dawn

Tennessee teacher Nathan Blankenship was booted out of Kenny Chesney's Nashville-area show on Saturday, according to ABC affiliate WKRN-TV. The reason? He apparently looked a little too much like the country-music star.

Blankenship spent $200 to buy his ticket to the Chesney/Tim McGraw "Brothers of the Sun" show. He told WKRN he'd been to several Chesney concerts in recent years -- and when he attends, people naturally want his picture, since he resembles the singer and dresses like him (cowboy hat, sleeveless T-shirt) .

"Here or there somebody asked to take a picture to make their friends or family think they were with Kenny or whatever, that's fine," he said. "I don't mind.... I can't help the way I look."

But security felt otherwise; as Blankenship reported, he was approached by a security officer who asked to see his ticket. "I just thought he was going to lead me back to my seat," he said. Instead, the security guard grabbed his arm and escorted him out. "He just said that (I was) purposely trying to impersonate a celebrity, so we're kicking you out."

WKRN reported that a "high-ranking" venue executive told Nashville's News 2 Sunday that local police were were alerted about Blankenship before the show, and, the network noted, "country music stars saw him in crowds at previous concerts and thought he was a disruption."

But Chesney's label, Messina Group, sees it differently and is working to patch things up. VP of marketing for Messina Kate McMahon said that no one was aware of that Blankenship was shown the door. "We never want our fans to leave disappointed and we are reaching out to him to make this situation right," she said.

Blankenship issued a statement to Nashville's News 2 Monday night, indicating that the company has offered to refund his ticket cost and send him CDs.?

He added, "I am not now, nor have I ever been a Kenny Chesney impersonator and contrary to several reports, I do not sign autographs, pretend to be him for financial gain, or follow him around from concert to concert.... I have never wanted to be famous and after all this attention from the press, I am glad I chose to be a teacher. I am sure that when school starts back in August and the students ask about my summer break, I will have quite a story to tell."

Report: Best Buy founder may seek buyout deal

(AP) ? Best Buy Co. founder Richard Schulze may be considering a bid to take the electronics retailer private, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

The report, citing people familiar with Schulze's thinking, sent Best Buy shares higher Tuesday afternoon. The stock closed up 5 percent.

Richard Schulze, 71, founded the company in 1966 and is its largest shareholder by far with a 20 percent stake. The second-largest holder, the mutual fund manager Fidelity Management & Research Co., has 6.9 percent.

Schulze said earlier this month that he was considering options for his stake.

The WSJ report reiterated that Schulze could still sell his stake. But it said his "preference" is to take the company private, although the process of finding potential buyout partners is in the early stages.

Schulze initially announced in May that he would step down on June 21 at the company's annual meeting after an investigation found he knew that the then CEO Brian Dunn was having an inappropriate relationship with a female staffer. At the time he said he would remain as chairman until after the company's annual meeting on June 21 and as a director through the 2013 annual meeting.

However, he resigned abruptly June 7 instead.

"There is an urgent need for Best Buy to reinvigorate growth by reconnecting with today's customers and building pathways to the next generation of consumers," Schulze said in a statement on June 7. "Accordingly, I have shared my views with the Board and today informed them of my decision to resign as chairman and a director, effective immediately, in order to explore all available options for my ownership stake."

Best Buy and a spokesman for Schulze declined to comment.

Shares of Best Buy rose 86 cents, or 4.7 percent, to close at $19.37. The stock slipped 11 cents in after-hours trading. The stock is down about 21 percent since the beginning of the year.
